berkley hand

I just have to highlight one of my favorite TV moments of 2013. Recently on Dancing with the Stars, Elizabeth Berkley was able to do a fun, silly dance recreation of her famous “I’m So Excited” scene from Saved By The Bell. The 9th episode of season 2 of SBTB is entitled “Jessie’s Song”. The focus of the episode is that the girls on the show have formed a singing group (under Zack’s guidance, of course) called Hot Sundae. Since Jessie has always been obsessed with her grades she can’t let them slide to devote time to the group. Instead she starts popping caffeine pills in an effort to stay awake enough to juggle both.

While my main excitement over Berkley appearing on this season stems from my intense love of Showgirls, it’s my all time favorite movie, I also grew up on SBTB. While watching this dance I suddenly felt 11 again, instead of 30. Totally awesome! Without further ado, please enjoy viewing this dance. (Two scenes from the original SBTB episode are below as well.)

I’ve been a huge fan of Kevin Smith ever since I first rented a VHS copy of Mallrats from the since closed Hollywood Video. It was then that I finally took the advice of my issues of Premiere Magazine and rented Clerks. I then forced everyone that I knew to watch Clerks. So it’s only natural that I devote an entire Netflix post to Smith’s work.

Click the film titles to be taken directly to the film on Netflix.

Jay and Silent Bob Go Down Under (2012)
down under

I have not had a chance to check this special out yet but it’s a Kevin Smith special with Jason Mewes (ah), I don’t think you can go wrong with that. It was filmed in Sydney, Australia.

Comic Book Men (2012 Seasons 1-2)
comic book men

I haven’t had cable in a few years so I had not heard of this series. It’s basically AMC’s geekier version of Pawn Stars. I didn’t think I’d be into it. I’ve never been a fan of comic books. It’s not like I never tried reading them, but they just aren’t my thing. I enjoy comic book films and the characters’ stories though.

I’m very happy that I decided to give this a chance as I love it. I can’t help marathoning the episodes. I’m a flea market/yard sale/ebayer, who used to collect action figures so it’s actually a great fit for me. Each episode recaps something interesting that took place at Kevin Smith’s comic book store in Jersey, Jay & Silent Bob’s Secret Stash. The guys who work in the store discuss these events with Kevin on every ep, so yes he’s always on the show. Plus you get appearances from other View Askew actors such as Jason Mewes and Brian O’Halloran.

Red State (2011)
red state

Red State has nothing to do with the View Askew universe. After Cop Out, Smith went in yet another direction with this movie. This horror/thriller is very unique, so much so that I don’t like to give too much away about the plot. It starts out with a group of teen guys (including the yummy Kyle Gallner) talking sex at school. It soon turns into a very creepy horror flick involving religion. The movie costars Michael Angarano, Anna Gunn, Stephen Root, Kevin Pollak, Marc Blucas and John Goodman.

Kevin Smith: Burn in Hell (2011)
burn in hell

If you want to know more about the above movie, Red State, then check out this Kevin Smith appearance.

Kevin Smith: Too Fat For 40 (2010)
40

This particular Smith special includes many interesting stories about Zack and Miri Make a Porno, Cop Out and weed, among other issues. It was filmed in Jersey.

4.3.2.1 (2010)
4321
Smith plays the character of Big Larry in this movie. The plot of this British crime thriller involves four female friends and diamond thieves.

Phineas and Ferb (2010)
phineas

Smith made an appearance on an episode of this childrens’ animated series about two stepbrothers during their summer vacation. Smith portrays Clive Addison, a special effects guru. This episode also included an appearance by Seth MacFarlane.

Zack and Miri Make a Porno (2008)
miri mewes

I can’t even explain how much I love this movie. Wait, yes I can, just go check this out. Though not a part of the Jersey trilogy this is, to me, a classic Kevin Smith film. It’s an awesome, filthy comedy about down on their luck characters. Plus it’s set in Pittsburgh (I’m from Southwestern PA). It stars one of my favorite actors, Seth Rogen, and Elizabeth Banks as best friends who decide to make a porno together since they are in desperate need of money. It includes so many other awesome actors as well, such as Jason Mewes, Craig Robinson and Justin Long.

This Film Is Not Yet Rated (2006)
rated

If you are a movie buff then you probably have some questions about how the movie ratings system operates. It has a lot to due with dollars. Find out more in this documentary.

Small Town Gay Bar (2006)
gay bar

Kevin Smith was an executive producer of this documentary about “The story of community in the Deep South that is forced to deal with the struggles of ignorance, hypocrisy and oppression.” (via IMDB.com). I haven’t seen this but Kevin mentions how he got involved in this project during his Burn in Hell special.

Comic Book: The Movie (2004)
comic book the movie

Mark Hamill stars in this comedy about “The relationship between Hollywood and comic book culture is lambasted in this mockumentary as a beloved heroic character is rung through the studio system.” (via IMDB.com). This isn’t really up my alley but I plan on trying to give it a go one day.

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001)
strike back

“What the fuck is the internet?”-Jay
Jay and Silent Bob is the most in your face, self referential of the View Askewniverse flicks. Jay and Silent Bob get caught up in a diamond heist/animal theft while trying stop Miramax from making a movie. The movie is based on the comic Bluntman and Chronic (from Chasing Amy) who were based on Jay and Silent Bob. Basically everyone from the past Jersey flicks is in this and often play multiple characters and/or themselves.

Donnie Darko (2001)
darko

Kevin Smith is credited with a special thanks credit on this movie. He is also included on the DVD commentary. I’m not actually a big Donnie Darko fan. It was interesting but it’s just not a favorite of mine. The movie stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a teen having Doomsday visions.

Scream 3
scream 3

Scream 3 is definitely not the best Scream movie in the series. Serial killer survival Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) visits Hollywood since they are making her story into a movie. Smith appears as Silent Bob on a Hollywood backlot in a cameo role.

Law & Order (2000)

I’m not at all interested in this crime drama show. However Smith did appear in the 17th episode of season 10 from 2000 entitled, “Black, White and Blue” as “Tony’s Wife’s Nephew”. The plot of this particular episode involves racial issues and the police.

Chasing Amy (1997)
amy

I haven’t watched Chasing Amy as much as Smith’s other movies because it’s more serious. It’s still awesome, of course. Ben Affleck and Jason Lee play comic book creators who meet Amy (Joey Lauren Adams). She becomes involved with Affleck’s character even though she had previously identified as a lesbian.

Good Will Hunting (1997)
will hunting

Smith was a co-executive producer on this movie that helped launch his friend Ben Affleck’s career. Matt Damon stars as a janitor who’s actually a genius at math. This touching Gus Van Sant flick deals with classism and love.

Clerks (1994)
clerks
via http://viewaskew.com/gallery/images/clerks/seal.jpg

Ah, Clerks, the movie that started it all. This hilarious, dialogue heavy comedy is about two friends who work at adjoining convenience and video stores. It’s set during a typical day as a clerk, based heavily on Smith’s own young life. Dante Hicks (Brian O’Halloran) and Randal Graves (Jeff Anderson) were so popular that not only was there later a cartoon version, Clerks: The Animated Series but also, eventually, Clerks 2, which is so fuckin’ funny. Plus Kevin Smith has announced plans to make a Clerks 3 in the future, woot!

3.5 out of 5 stars

For a Good Time Call poster

For a Good Time, Call…is a raunchy 2012 comedy written by and starring Lauren Miller. The only thing that I knew going in was that it concerns phone sex. Lauren Miller is Seth Rogen’s wife. This was my first experience watching a movie that I knew she was in. So far she doesn’t have a long filmography, which is scattered with small roles in Rogen’s films.

Lauren Miller in For a Good Time Call

Yes, it’s taken me a while to check out this fun film. It’s theatrical release was limited so many didn’t have the option of checking it out until the flick’s DVD release earlier this year. Even then I wasn’t so sure about checking it out due to the lack of advertising and familiarity with the main actresses. However I finally got around to it and I’m glad that I did. Aside from Miller, the film costars the bubbly blonde Ari Graynor. You may know her as the chick that Jonah Hill’s character wasn’t dating but wanted to be in The Sitter. BTW-Her wardrobe in this is awesome. She can totally rock a jumpsuit. The supporting cast is pretty great. It includes Justin Long, Nia Vardalos and Mimi Rogers. Seth Rogen, Ken Marino and Kevin Smith even show up in cameo roles. Yes, they are phone sex customers!

Seth Rogen in For A Good Time Call

You will probably be wondering the same thing that I was when I heard that it is about phone sex, why phone sex in this day and age? People are more likely to check out say a webcam site to get their rocks off. However the reasoning seems to be that the girl has been doing it for years so I guess the audience can infer that it was more popular then. It’s also based on Miller and co-writer Katie Anne Naylon’s real experiences.

This is the type of movie that is brash and over the top but also sweet. It’s a bit reminiscent of a Judd Apatow picture in that way. Not every joke works. I don’t really care for urine jokes but maybe they felt they were the chick version of fart jokes.

The flick is about two girls who met briefly in college through their gay bestie and took an instant disdain towards one another. Now both need roommates so he gets them to meet and agree to the arrangement. One starts out high strung while the other is wild. Yes, she has a stripper pole for sexercising! Eventually they build both a business and a friendship.

Ari Graynor, Justin Long and Lauren Miller in For a Good Time Call

All in all I’d say check it out. I’m not sure how it will stand up to repeated viewings but it’s worth at least one.

Unfortunately most of my favorite musicals are no longer available on Netflix. I haven’t had time to watch all of the below films but they are in my queue and I plan on checking them out in the future. Plus I’ve heard good things about them.

Footloose (2011)
footloose 2011

I have not watched this remake yet. I do enjoy Julianne Hough and dance movies (ala Step Up though). Hot Donna told me it was decent and I will eventually get to watching it. It’s a remake of the 80’s original. You probably know the gist, teens aren’t allowed to dance in some weird hick town, so they rebel by dancing.

Velvet Goldmine (1998)
vg

Yes, I fucking adore Velvet Goldmine. I went into it with a love of Ewan McGregor and gay men and just came out someone even more awesome, if that’s possible. It taught me about glam rock and Oscar Wilde and accessorizing with copious amounts of glitter. Plot, you ask? Christian Bale plays a young reporter tasked to find out what happened to a supposedly dead bisexual glam rock star Brian Slade (basically a fictionalized version of David Bowie). Yes, that’s Ewan rocking out above as Curt Wild (inspired by Iggy Pop). The amazing cast also includes Eddie Izzard.

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

nightmare burton

Have you ever been inside of a Hot Topic? Yes, then you’ve probably seen Jack Skellington before. So you know his visage but have you seen the movie? Well hopefully, it’s been out for fucking ever and it’s amazing. Tim Burton’s stop motion puppet musical is a gothic love tale about Halloween Town. Halloween Town is home to a bunch of awesome ghoulies. The movie is about how the sweet Jack Skellington stumbles onto Christmas Town and tries to bring their traditions back to his town. He also meets Sally, whom he falls for.

Footloose (1984)
footloose orig

Yes, this is the original Footloose starring Kevin Bacon. Yes, it’s about a town that’s outlawed dancing. I was born a year before this film’s release. I grew up with it being overplayed on TV and Bacon even goofing on his performance on other shows. So I’m not like a big fan or anything but he sure could dance.

The Muppet Movie (1979)

muppets

Plot: “Kermit and his new found friends trek across America to find success in Hollywood, but a frog-legs merchant is after Kermit.” (via IMDB.com) I haven’t watched The Muppet Movie since I was a small child but Miss Piggy is an idol of mine so I really need to get on that.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968)
chitty

Plot: “A hapless inventor finally finds success with a flying car, which a dictator from a foreign government sets out to take for himself.” (via imdb.com) I’m never watching this movie again. That’s not an insult, I just watched it so much as a child that I couldn’t do it again. Yeah, my dad is a big Dick Van Dyke fan.

Carmen Jones (1954)
carmen sm

Plot: “Love, passion, betrayal and tragedy. Carmen Jones is an adaptation of Bizet’s legendary opera, Carmen. It tells the story of a young, free spirited woman called Carmen Jones whose great beauty is the object of many men’s desires. However, Carmen sets her sights on young army officer Joe, who is engaged to his sweetheart, Cindy Lou. Joe quickly succumbs to Carmen’s charms , forsaking his Cindy Lou, thus beginning the tragic love story.” (via IMDB.com) It seems wrong that I’ve never gotten around to watching this as it’s considered a classic film but I’m so behind on anything pre-1960s. Not a great excuse, I know.
Stars Dorothy Dandridge.

There’s No Business Like Show Business (1954)
show bus

Plot: “Molly and Terry Donahue, plus their three children, are The Five Donahues. Son Tim meets hat-check girl Vicky and the family act begins to fall apart.” (via IMDB.com). Okay it’s not really my cup of tea but you know I love Marilyn Monroe. She performs the following songs in this film, Lazy, Heat Wave and After You Get What You Want, You Don’t Want It.

A Star Is Born (1937)
star born

Plot: “A young woman comes to Hollywood with dreams of stardom, but achieves them only with the help of an alcoholic leading man whose best days are behind him.” (via IMDB.com) Okay, this is one of three versions of A Star Is Born and I haven’t seen it yet. I’ve only seen the Streisand version because, c’mon I love her. I am totally going to give this one a try though. In case you are curious, no I haven’t seen Garland’s version yet either, which is insane.

Bill Skarsgard on Hemlock Grove
