Maleficent-good movie, great headwear

Maleficent-good movie, great headwear

Most years I write about what I’m planning to do for my birthday, what I have already done for my birthday, or why I’m (yet again) lamenting my birthday.

Now, for something completely different. My birthday just passed. It was a nice day/weekend. However, what I’m contemplating at this time are the attempts and accomplishments that have taken place since my last birthday.

Impending Graduation
I am currently starting my last semester of school. In the fall, I will finally earn my Associate’s Degree. It took one extra semester. It’s been more work than I expected. There have been doubts, but I will do this. Eventually (hopefully sooner, rather than later), I will then start on my Bachelor’s.

Life as a Disney Cast Member
The reason that I am one semester behind my peers is that I took a leave of absence last fall to participate in the Disney College Program. It was the most difficult, but also one of the most amazing times of my life. It wasn’t easy. There was a lot of hard work and restrictions. The benefits, experiences, and friendships definitely made it well worth it. WDW is now considered one of my past homes to me. I don’t know if you ever truly leave Disney behind, after working there. I’m always itching and contemplating going back in some capacity. Only time will tell.

Love
My love life has changed in leaps and bounds since this time last year. It’s basically unrecognizable. I’m happy.

Food/Exercise
I was on a huge fitness kick at this time last year. However, I love food. I’m not fond of structured exercise on the daily. I will most likely always struggle with my disordered eating, because I am human. Note: This is more difficult when you are not walking 10-12 miles on the daily, while working at the most magical place on Earth.

Comfort Zone
I can now walk out of my comfort zone. I still suffer from social anxiety/generalized anxiety and am on the spectrum. Yet, I work to overcome/work with these issues daily. Disney definitely helped with this. So, yes I’m still incredibly uncomfortable, but no I’m not going to always just fall back, stand down, or hide. I’m going to strive.

Embracing MY Interests
I am currently embracing both my nerdiness and inner princess to their full extents. It’s not that I’m not worried about others, but I matter more. I definitely regret more of the things that I haven’t done in life, than those that I have. I play Dungeons and Dragons and wear my Minnie ears, deal with it.

Body Realization
My body can handle a lot, but it doesn’t mean that I should push it so hard. I worked and played hard in Orlando and to a different extent in PA, but this isn’t something I need to be doing on the daily. I ended up in the ICU with severe dehydration in April. I do not recommend that. I’m just happy that it happened here, while I was with family.

Cosplay
I, finally (after 9 years of attending cons!), cosplayed both last year and this year, at Philly Wizard World. It takes balls, but I did it.

And now to make the next year even better.

As you may recall, I’m a huge fan of the annual Philadelphia Wizard World Comic Con. This year, I’m as excited as ever. The wonderfully fun to watch stars of the CW’s Arrow are on the guest list. Yes, both Arrow (Stephen Amell) and Laurel herself (Katie Cassidy) will be appearing!

If you haven’t checked out Arrow yet, I’d recommend doing so ASAP. This superhero show does get suspenseful, but isn’t always serious. You gotta love a show in which multiple characters know the lead’s secret identity, which is mainly covered by green eye makeup.

Amell is able to portray Oliver Queen skillfully in both the present and in flashbacks, when he was still a spoiled rich boy. Not to worry, he’s not really like that anymore, due to “5 YEARS ON THE ISLAND!” Oliver, aka the Arrow, aka the Hood is one hell of a vigilante. His parkour game is on point.

laurel

Katie Cassidy plays attorney Laurel Lance. She’s one tough cookie. Of course, Oliver and Laurel have a history. It’s awesome to be able to watch Ms. Cassidy regularly. I’ve been a fan of hers since her role in the Black Christmas remake.

Getting the chance to meet two of the fab stars of Arrow is definitely one of my top reasons for attending the Philly Wizard World show this year. It could only get better if Diggle were enlisted.

Kris Holden-Ried is a good-natured actor who is currently known for his portrayal of Dyson on Syfy’s Lost Girl. I was lucky enough to catch his Q&A and later meet him at the 2013 Philadelphia Wizard World Comic Con. Lost Girl recently finished airing its third season. In case you aren’t in the know, Lost Girl is about a succubus who learns that there is a whole world of magic within our own. Kris plays Dyson, a police detective/werewolf. He mentioned that the cast is gearing up to film the fourth season this upcoming week. He just managed to squeeze this con into his schedule. The Q&A was moderated by Rebecca Housel.

Filming was allowed at this Q&A but Hot Donna and I had some technical issues. So while we were only able to film a few snippets of the Q&A, which you can watch below, we also took notes.

A few choices anecdotes:

fan: “Who was the biggest practical joker on set?”
Kris: “I’ve been known to walk onto set without my pants on.”

Kris: “I would definitely do superhero roles.”

Ried loves playing Dyson.

He has great on and off screen relationships with both of the main actresses, Anna Silk and Ksenia Solo (who play Bo & Kenzi).

While he doesn’t feel that he’s been typecast thus far as a werewolf in both Lost Girl & Underworld: Awakening (2012), he wouldn’t take a similar role in the very near future.

He is a fan of Games of Thrones. He’d like to appear on the show if it weren’t for scheduling issues with Lost Girl.

“I like everything from classical to rap”

on the episode “Original Skin”

Hot Donna later told me that her initial thought when watching the show was “This guy (the character of Dyson) walks like a jerk”

“they’ve been inside each other literally…but not the p in the v kind”

Hot Donna and I both purchased photos with Ried at his table on Saturday and Sunday, as he’s fun, friendly and sexy. The first time I mentioned he was hilarious at the panel, which he seemed to like. The next day I complimented him on his hat. He replied that it was his bad hair day. I said “Nah, you don’t have bad hair days” and he said “self inflicted”.

His convention manager, Holly Evans, was personable and even remembered us when we returned for another photo on Sunday. She told him that we were back, it was slightly embarrassing but funny. I said “yeah, we’re here every day” and he said “me too”.

Hot Donna would like to mention how huggable Mr. Ried is and I fully concur.

A press pass to the convention was provided to me gratis from the awesome PR team at Wizard World. For more info on upcoming Wizard World conventions please visit the Wizard World site.

Remember last summer when Hot Donna and I covered the Wizard World Philadelphia Comic Con? Well I’m hoping to attend this summer as well. The event takes place from May 30-June 1, 2013. Since it’s so far off all of the celebrity guests haven’t been announced yet. However some choice guests have already been announced? Guess who I’m super excited about?

That’s right, John Cena. Cena is most well known for being a wrestling superstar with the WWE. I’m not a big wrestling fan but I’m totally into his action movies. The Marine is awesomely fun. Oh & well he is super hot. Want to know a secret? Hot Donna almost bought a standee of him back when we had an apartment together. Yep, that’s how awesome he is. Cena will be sighing autographs and doing photo ops on May 30, 2013 (my birthday!) from 3:30PM ET to 7:30PM ET.

Cena has stated, “I’m glad to be back at Wizard World, I had such an amazing time meeting the fans last year in Chicago, I can’t wait to see the northeast Cenation fans at Philadelphia Comic Con!”

Some other awesome guests who have been announced include James Marsters, Juliet Landau, Norman Reedus, Andrew McCarthy, Joey Lawrence, Michael Rooker, Linda Blair, Ray Park, Lou Ferrigno and Stan Lee. I’m excited to hear further announcements in the coming months.

Meeting Elvira

Last weekend I attended the Steel City Con in Monroeville, PA again. Yes, I’ve gone quite often in the last few years since it’s fairly close to where I live (about an hour away). I went to meet Elvira (Cassandra Peterson). I’ve been a fan of hers for as long as I can remember. In fact I dressed as her for Halloween in 2005. Even buying my costume was hilarious. My social anxiety was actually worse then so after I found the dress a worker came up to ask if I needed anything and I blurted “A WIG” overly loud. “It’s a wig” emergency!” he declared and he, my sister and myself all had a good laugh. Obviously my costume was a big hit at our party as well because, hey, boobs!

Anyway, back on track, we arrived around the time that she was supposed to show but they were still getting her table ready. Plus the line was forming and yes, it was very large, especially for this small con. So my fiance and I decided to check out the merchandise before getting into line. I (rightly) assumed that we’d be tired after waiting and want to go pretty soon. Plus we had just been sitting in the car for a while so we needed to walk around.

I often see many great cosplayers at the Monroeville Convention Center. However this time while there were a ton of attendees many of the cosplayers weren’t super impressive. I really only feel like accosting strangers who look fantastic so I just got a photo with a guy who had great Darth Maul makeup.

I picked up a few neat presents while we were checking out the dealers. Some of the sellers that I purchased from were the talented RAK and Candy Box Crafts. My man bought the cool necklace that he’s wearing above as well.

Eventually we decided that we better get in Elvira’s line. The people in the line were quite varied. Old, young, conservatively dressed or sporting a metal or goth look. I wore my Coquette capris and a cleavage boosting top with my trusty boots. Yes, being December and all I’m starting to think that I really need to buy the full leggings as well.

It took somewhere from 40 minutes to an hour to reach the table. Some of the people in the line were pretty funny so listening to their convos was pretty interesting. Plus we were stuck by one seller in particular for a while who had some affordable toys. I’m glad that we were staring at his table for a while because they had the original Monopoly which I’ve wanted forever. My man bought it for me as an Xmas present, aw.

As we got closer we were able to watch Cassandra Peterson in action. She’s just as fun as in the movies. She was very informative and funny. We found out that she will be filming another Elvira movie, Movie Macabre soon. Apparently it was a short lived TV series that I somehow missed. You can check it out on YouTube here. She made some great quips like when someone asked her how much an autographed photo was and she said “a million dollars”. She was also holding up her new calendar and pitching it like she was in an infomercial. It was really cute. She did her classic shocked expression pose for lots of attendees which was very neat. Her trainer/assistant was very nice and super buff. She even had a bunch of guys requesting funny poses with her. I thought that the merchandise that Elvira had for sale was great. I would have picked up one or two things in addition to my signed photo if I’d had more money. I really liked the 45 with the Movie Macabre theme song on it and the calendar. My fiance wished he had some extra dough to pick up one of her Zippo lighters. She said that the song was on a record because the person who had worked on it likes them. I later found out, via her site, that Jack White produced it, so cool!

When we got our turn to meet her I was such a mess. When I’m a huge fan of someone I literally shake. So yes I was shaking when her assistant took the photo above, I’m surprised that it came out so well. Elvira quipped “I’m above your head” to my fiance when we showed it to her because of the large banner of her in the background. He got a real kick out of that. At first I lamely said “We love you. You’re so beautiful.”, yes full fangirl mode. Then I told her that I had introduced my fiance to her movies. When I found out that she was attending the con we watched Haunted Hills and her original film. Of course he thought that she was awesome. She responded that I was like Scientology recruiting people for her.

So yeah, she was one of the most fun guests that I’ve met at a con. Some celebs barely look at you or come off as angry. She was super fun, like the persona that she projects on film and TV.

After we met her we had to do one more lap around the dealers’ tables. Usually I would meet more than one guest at a con but the only other person I was interested in meeting was Alan Ruck and he had to cancel. I had already met Peter Mayhew in June at Philly Wizard World so I didn’t feel the need to bother him again. Before we left we had to get a picture with the Lego Spiderman that was assembled near the entrance.

It was so much better going to the convention center with my man than when I’ve gone alone. I even forgot and then realized that I didn’t need to take a Xanax for my anxiety even though there had to be 400-500 people in the room. Hopefully we will get to attend the next con in 2013 too. It is in April and will feature Kevin Sorbo and Ernie Hudson.
