Top New Year’s Eve Dresses for Less from Rent the Runway!

Since many of you are fashion mavens I had to share this fab New Year’s Eve deal from Rent the Runway. Rent the Runway is a very cool service that lets you rent designer dresses/gowns from them for your special events for a fraction of the retail price. For instance, say you love a dress that retails for $400 but you could never just shell that out, well you could rent it for $50 for your birthday.

Right now they are doing an incredible sale. They have dresses at the super low price point of $20.14 per rental for New Year’s Eve (get it, it’s turning from 2013 to 2014, oh my!). They also have special $30.14 and $40.14 deals, which is super low for these styles.

Okay, included in this post are my favorites. When it comes to designers you have the likes of Nicole Miller, Lela Rose, Kate Spade New York, Lilly Pulitzer, Badgley Mischka and Anna Sui. When it comes to fit you have body hugging or flowy and forgiving. Style wise you can be sexy or sweet. Some picks are more classic than daring, if that’s your bag. I’m a bit partial to the sparkly dresses myself.

(photos are clickable for a somewhat larger view)

Please be aware that other styles are available these are just my top picks for someone with my style preferences who wears my size dress (10-12). Make sure to browse the whole selection, especially if none of these pop out at you.

To sign up for Rent the Runway, feel free to use my referral link, here. When you do so you will get a $20 rental credit applied to your account (as will I, FYI).

For the best price I’d recommend signing up for their PRO membership first. ($29.99 per year, includes free insurance & shipping on all orders, plus a free birthday dress!). If you are not a PRO member you will still have to pay insurance and shipping on your super sweet $20.14 dress.

Now on to delivery times (for those of us outside of Manhattan). For standard shipping you need to order by 3PM ET Christmas, Wednesday, December 25, 2013. If you are okay with rush shipping fees you can wait until Thursday, December 26th. This is to get an extended rental. You choose 12/27 as your delivery date and 1/2 as your return date. If you are more of a last minute dame you can plan to receive your dress on 12/30 by ordering it by 3PM ET on 12/27 and choosing standard shipping.

Do you already have your NYE outfit picked out? If not, which of these would you go with?

missemmamm’s Top 5 Spring 2012 Fashion Trends

Of course I had to share my favorite styles for this spring with you.

Drop Waist Dresses

1920’s inspired drop waist dresses have been back in a big way lately. I think it’s pretty great that they were also around in the 80s and 90s. So now you can buy a handful of them in a variety of styles. I chose some classic, some modern, a couple that are 80s influenced and the fun Bridget Fondaesque 90s pick in the middle.

Super Chunky

I believe these started coming back in a big way last fall but I couldn’t really get into them then because of the weather. Now I would love to bust out some fun, 90s style super chunky kicks. Any of these with a babydoll dress would be adorable. You could also amp up some of the more low key drop waist dresses above with a pair of these.

Just make sure that you can walk in the height that you choose. I know that I always think, the higher the better, but you don’t want to end up eating the sidewalk. In the 90s I saw a girl wearing those extremely high Japanese street style sneakers. While they were awesome she fell down repeatedly. It was bad, I was worried she’d break a leg.

Statement Barrettes

Yes, this is a “me thing”. Lately I’ve been spotting eye catching barrettes and actually buying them to jazz up my unruly do. They are just plain fun. The above cost a bit more than I’d usually spend but I find them at discount stores and department stores all of the time. Just keep your eyes peeled. Etsy would probably be a good place to search for one of a kind barrettes.

Maxi Caftans

Yep, I’ve really wanted to start collecting maxi caftans since I bought my first one by Rachel Zoe recently. It seems that caftans (or kaftans, if you prefer) were very popular in the 70s and then again in the 90s (especially dashikis). They are pretty timeless though.

Since it’s been unseasonably warm try to choose yours in a lighter fabric. Shorter caftans are probably more comfortable in the heat but I would feel like I’d just wandered away from a pool. Plus I don’t find them flattering to my legs as they seem to cut me off at an odd angle.

eBay and thrift stores are especially fun to scour for caftans.

Sky High Wedges

It’s no secret that I frickin’ love shoes. These days I’m even more excited by sky high wedges than the usual beachy suspects. These would definitely look hot with a maxi caftan as well as your go to warm weather gear. Make sure that if your caftan is super long that you don’t trip in these babies (umm, not that I’d ever do that).

What will you ladies be sporting this season?

Jason Wu for Target: Top 5 Pieces

I’ve been a fan of Jason Wu’s designs for years. So as soon as his collaboration for Target was announced last year I grew super excited. The collection includes 53 pieces. The idea for his collection is “American girl in Paris”.

Wu’s attitude about the collection is fantastic, “By working with Target I was able to create an accessible collection that reflects my sophisticated design aesthetic.” “As with my main collection, special attention has been considered into every detail and I can’t wait to see girls wearing and enjoying the collection.”

Trench Coat in Black, $54.99/Poplin Dress in Navy, $39.99

This trench is just amazing. I love the lines. It will also be available in navy. Of course this is the dress that’s been circulating all over. It’s no surprise that it’s already coveted since it has such a classic look.

Pleated Canvas Skirt in Belize Blue $29.99/Front-Flap Bag in Blue Floral $39.99/Long-Sleeved Pointelle Sweater in Belize Blue $39.99

I’m dying for the items in “belize blue”. They are so adorable. I could actually see myself wearing all 3 of these pieces together with a white top and some white patent mary janes.

The collection includes clothing priced $19.99 to $59.99 and handbags and scarves priced $19.99 to $49.99. it will be available from February 5th through March 6, 2012 (or until supplies are gone). Don’t forget to check as well as your local store since some pieces are only available online. The collection is not available at all Target locations. You can check to see if your Target is included by visiting the official Facebook page, here. Ours isn’t but maybe I’ll be able to score something on

Your Perfect 2011 New Year’s Eve Dress: As Seen On Gossip Girl

In November while watching an episode of Gossip Girl entitled The Big Sleep No More I was captivated by Charlie’s dress. It’s this gold, sequin, embellished v-neck stunner. Gold isn’t a game changer for New Year’s. However I feel that this particular combo and specifically the cut of the dress (not an often unflattering tube like is always being marketed to us for parties) is what makes it so special. This particular dress is the Lorena Sarbu Resort 2012 Sequin Embellished Dress. The official site is here. However there isn’t any ordering info listed on it. If you want this particular dress I’d suggest calling them and inquiring about it. It’s probably also incredibly inexpensive in addition to being difficult to get.

So I’ve searched around and found some similar dresses below. If you need it for this weekend then I suggest only buying from a site that offers super fast shipping. Otherwise I suggest checking out large somewhat upscale department stores for a similar style. It’s difficult to find a dress with all of the above characteristics that doesn’t break the bank so I’ve also included a variety of dresses that only incorporate some of them.

Style File: A Teal Thanksgiving

jacket by Dots-Dots, dress-thrifted (label removed), feather necklace-Burlington Coat Factory, textured blue tights-Dollar Tree, Vivica wedges-ShoeDazzle

If the measure of a successful Thanksgiving is found within the meal then ours was pretty good. We had 3 types of pie! (pecan, pumpkin, mincemeat-not my thing). We also got to catch up with family that we hadn’t seen in a while.

I had found this totally cute dress at a thrift store not long ago & loved it. It’s more of a spring/summer dress but I couldn’t wait that long to wear it. Since it has a bit of teal in it I added this teal jacket I got at Dots a while back. It’s a bit of an awkward wear since it hits at the elbow. Later I had to add a cardigan for warmth.

I also had a teal feather necklace that I had bought when I thought that I was going as Kesha for Halloween. I ended up being a flapper instead. Though I hadn’t seen myself in the feather necklace trend prior to this I thought that since I had it I might as well wear it. I ended up digging it.

I just had to wear my cute Vivica wedges (also seen here) from ShoeDazzle with it. The nude tights that I’d laid out had a run and I wasn’t keen on wearing leggings that hit at the ankle with these shoes. That’s how I decided on my super blue tights (also seen here). They take it a bit over the top but then again so am I.
