William Sanders at the April 2014 Steel City Con

William Sanders at the April 2014 Steel City Con

Recently I was able to attend yet another Steel City Con. While browsing vendor tables I noticed an eye catching movie poster. I asked the dude who was manning the table, what was happening. He explained that he was there to let people know about his upcoming film Road Trip of the Dead. William Sanders (director/writer/producer) told me a bit about the project. He explained that unlike many other films, it’s not actually a zombie movie. Instead it’s a documentary style horror film. The general plot is that a group of friends decide to visit the locations used by George Romero while filming in and around the Pittsburgh area.

If you aren’t from this area you may not realize how big it is that Romero shot around here. Chances are you know somebody who knows somebody who had something to do with one of his PA movies. I once had an entire convo with a guy bagging my groceries at a local supermarket who told me how he was an extra in 1990’s Night of the Living Dead. So yeah, that’s the cool thing about this area.

Road Trip of the Dead is sure to be both entertaining and informative. Locations featured in the flick will include the Monroeville Mall, the Evans City Cemetery and the Wampum Mines. Plus Tom Savini will be in the film!

Wouldn’t you like to help make this movie happen? Right now, you can go back it on Indiegogo. Indiegogo is a crowdfunding site similar to Kickstarter but with one huge difference, the fundraisers get the money regardless of whether or not they are able to raise the entire goal amount. That means these guys can still make their awesome movie even though they may not meet their goal.

There are a variety of perks available. For only $5 you can receive a special thanks credit, for $10 you will receive a special thanks credit, an Iron City Beer Bottle Opener and a 4X6 promo card from the film, $25 gets you a special thanks credit, a shout out on the film’s official Facebook and twitter accounts and an awesome Road Trip of the Dead poster signed by the cast. Of course there are many other perks that you can receive when you back the movie. They include props and other memorabilia pertaining to Romero’s flicks.

This sounds like a very interesting movie to help fund. Check out some videos from the team behind the film below. Then back it.

Scary Movie (2000)
scary movie

The first Scary Movie spoofed many of the films listed on this list, as well as others that are not currently available on Netflix. Though it was officially released in 2000, it definitely belongs here. Anna Faris and Shannon Elizabeth costar in this Wayans brothers comedy that is mainly based on the original Scream flick. Fun fact: Scream’s working title was Scary Movie.

Teaching Mrs. Tingle (1999)
teaching mrs tingle

The first Kevin Williamson penned movie on this list is the black comedy Teaching Mrs. Tingle. Katie Holmes, Marisa Couglan (Super Troopers), Barry Watson (Sorority Boys) and Helen Mirren co-star. The simple plot is about teens who want revenge on their bitchy teacher, the always sexy Helen mirren.

The Faculty (1998)
the faculty

This high school alien invasion flick from Robert Rodriguez is a must see. It’s The Body Snatchers meets The Breakfast Club. A truly fab 90s cast, including Josh Hartnett, Elijah Wood and Shawn Hatosy, is able to give life to the teen archetypes presented here. The teachers in the film are played by so many amazing actors that I’m not even going to list them, just watch it.

Disturbing Behavior (1998)
disturbing behavior

Disturbing Behavior is a creepy look at high school jock mentality. Something (and or someone) is changing these small town teens into shiny, 50’s style goodie two shoes, except when they get horny and then homicidal. Katie Holmes shines as sexy “trash” in this Kevin Williamson penned guilty pleasure. James Marsden (X-Men) costars as the new kid.

Bride of Chucky (1998)
bride of chucky

Definitely my favorite Chucky flick, this one is over the top fun. Jennifer Tilly is a boobaliscious, goth trailer chick who she gets her wish and brings back her ex, now in Chucky’s body, of course. Things get completely zany when he also transfers her soul to doll form. A young Katherine Heigl and John Ritter (as her angry dad) costar. Also keep an eye out for Alexis Arquette who is amazing in this.

Scream (1996)
scream poster

You’re most likely familiar with Wes Craven’s Scream. A hot cast of well known actors mixed with up and comers appear in this slasher movie that is so in the know that Jamie Kennedy’s character even lists what must happen in a horror flick in one of the definitive scenes. The cast is rounded out with Neve Canpbell (as the hero), Skeet Ulrich (as his hottest), Matthew Lillard, Rose McGowan (as a blonde), Henry Winkler, David Arquette and Courtney Cox. Some of the sequels are also available on Netflix.

Well Halloween has been my favorite holiday from childhood through adulthood. Unfortunately almost 5 years ago October became an emotional land mine for me. My brother died about a week and a half before Halloween. Then last year my 11 year old dog died the week before Halloween. My dog was basically like a son to me.

So even though Halloween has and always will be full of fun activities like wearing costumes (my favorite, as you well know), horror movies, passing out candy and partying, October is now very depressing for me. This year the hurricane also cast a pall over everything.

Prior to Halloween I was able to dress up once, as Minnie Mouse, to attend a party at a local club. You can check out some cute couples’ costumes from that party here. Plus I was able to see the flick Frankenweenie with my man. It was good but also sad because of the aforementioned death of my dog. We also enjoyed some of my old favorites, Hocus Pocus and Once Bitten at various times.

Some things were out. Hayrides were either too expensive or at inopportune times (plus it was raining often, big surprise, rain is so obtrusive in PA). The party that I was hoping that we could both go to in costume ended up being a bust so we didn’t go. Plus though trick or treating wasn’t cancelled, no children showed up due to the Hurricane and cold.

However despite all of that and my having an appointment with a stranger on Halloween morning (you know how terrible that is with my severe social anxiety), I had an amazing Halloween day. I really wanted to cheer myself up and feel sexy for when my man came over. So I wore this. Usually when you see outfit photos I have worn them out of my house or at least with a group of family at my house during a holiday or gathering. However only my man (and now you, xd) have seen this. Yes, it’s similar to my Sandy outfit (link below) but I’d definitely say sexier.

In addition to dressing up in sex kitten mode, we also had more Halloween fun. We watched Casper and I introduced him to Army of Darkness (ah, Bruce Campbell). My man isn’t a big horror movie fan but he totally got into it. Who can resist Bruce Campbell’s one liners? Plus we ate some Halloween candy. Hey, the trick or treaters never turned up, someone’s gotta do it. We also enjoyed the Rob Zombie channel that we created on Pandora. It was truly a lovely, romantic day (as I not so elegantly captured in this tweet).

HOW TO ENTER TO WIN
To enter, simply hit the like button for this blog’s Facebook page, below.

Then leave a comment simply stating Pike and your Facebook username, for instance, I would comment, Pike Emma Moon. I do think that this is fairly simple but people aren’t fond of my commenting system so this giveaway will be going on for the next two weeks, until November 13, 2012 at 7PM ET. It is only open to US residents.

WHAT IS THIRST?

Happy Halloween! Okay, technically Halloween’s tomorrow but I’m starting this giveaway today dagnabbit! Plus with Hurricane Sandy, Frankentstorm, or whatever the fuck you want to call it, I feel like we’ve lost Halloween day. It feels like Christmas already. Ah, global warming.

Anyway, I was a huge fan of Christopher Pike as a pre-teen. I devoured all of his books. My absolutely favorites that I continued to re-read over the years are his installments of the ongoing adventures of the vampire Sita/Alisa, The Last Vampire series. Sita is both bloodthirsty and loving. A few years ago the original books were compiled and re-released with new covers as the Thirst series, no doubt to capitalize on the vampire craze that’s been going on for a while.

Then something truly magical happened, in 2010 a full 16 years after the release of the first book we were treated to a new Sita adventure. Since then there has been yet another new book and the next is being released in 2013.

While shopping not long ago I was able to pick up extra copies of a couple of the books at a great price. These are brand new and unread. However there is price sticker residue left on the back covers of both books and a bit on the front on one because I couldn’t completely remove it. There is also a Sharpie smudge on the edge of Thirst No. 3. These books are not returnable to any store. They are to be enjoyed.

WHERE DO THESE BOOKS FIT INTO THE SERIES?
I am giving away Thirst No. 2, which is a compilation of the original books from 1996, 4. Phantom, 5. Evil Thirst and 6. Creatures of Forever. Plus the winner will receive Thirst No. 3, The Eternal Dawn. Thirst No. 3 can also be considered book 7 in the series. It was the first new book, which was released in 2010. For more on specific plots, check out the series’ Wikipedia page.

shot by RealTVFilms, showed up that weekend on an ABC affiliate news site, neat!

Over the summer I had the opportunity to attend the Philadelphia Wizard World Comic Con as press along with my sister and fellow writer, Hot Donna. While there we had so much fun and were able to learn more about our favorite films as well as being introduced to new films, such as Huff.

Huff is an independent horror movie that offers a new take on the old tale of The Three Little Pigs. It’s about a cash strapped, abusive stepfather (Charlie O’Connell) with three teen daughters. When he gets involved with a drug deal things go from bad to worse. Unfortunately we were unable to catch the screening of the film that was held at the con because we were in Atlantic City that night but I’m definitely looking forward to viewing it when it’s released. According to the official Facebook page the current estimated release date is April 5, 2013.

At Wizard World the team involved in the filming of the flick were on hand to give everyone a scoop on the picture. Charlie O’Connell (Sliders, Dude, Where’s My Car?) was even posing for photos and signing autographs for free.

We were fortunate enough to meet Charlie as well as producer Terry James, in addition to interviewing Elina Madison (1000 Ways to Die). Elina plays Lorelei in Huff. Please enjoy the following interview with her.

Elina Madison will next be seen in Creep Creepersin’s Dracula. Charlie O’Connell will next be seen on the new TV series Zombie Family. Terry James’ next endeavors are as a stunt coordinator for The Last Duane and a stunt driver in Feed the Dog.
