Scary Movie (2000)
scary movie

The first Scary Movie spoofed many of the films listed on this list, as well as others that are not currently available on Netflix. Though it was officially released in 2000, it definitely belongs here. Anna Faris and Shannon Elizabeth costar in this Wayans brothers comedy that is mainly based on the original Scream flick. Fun fact: Scream’s working title was Scary Movie.

Teaching Mrs. Tingle (1999)
teaching mrs tingle

The first Kevin Williamson penned movie on this list is the black comedy Teaching Mrs. Tingle. Katie Holmes, Marisa Couglan (Super Troopers), Barry Watson (Sorority Boys) and Helen Mirren co-star. The simple plot is about teens who want revenge on their bitchy teacher, the always sexy Helen mirren.

The Faculty (1998)
the faculty

This high school alien invasion flick from Robert Rodriguez is a must see. It’s The Body Snatchers meets The Breakfast Club. A truly fab 90s cast, including Josh Hartnett, Elijah Wood and Shawn Hatosy, is able to give life to the teen archetypes presented here. The teachers in the film are played by so many amazing actors that I’m not even going to list them, just watch it.

Disturbing Behavior (1998)
disturbing behavior

Disturbing Behavior is a creepy look at high school jock mentality. Something (and or someone) is changing these small town teens into shiny, 50’s style goodie two shoes, except when they get horny and then homicidal. Katie Holmes shines as sexy “trash” in this Kevin Williamson penned guilty pleasure. James Marsden (X-Men) costars as the new kid.

Bride of Chucky (1998)
bride of chucky

Definitely my favorite Chucky flick, this one is over the top fun. Jennifer Tilly is a boobaliscious, goth trailer chick who she gets her wish and brings back her ex, now in Chucky’s body, of course. Things get completely zany when he also transfers her soul to doll form. A young Katherine Heigl and John Ritter (as her angry dad) costar. Also keep an eye out for Alexis Arquette who is amazing in this.

Scream (1996)
scream poster

You’re most likely familiar with Wes Craven’s Scream. A hot cast of well known actors mixed with up and comers appear in this slasher movie that is so in the know that Jamie Kennedy’s character even lists what must happen in a horror flick in one of the definitive scenes. The cast is rounded out with Neve Canpbell (as the hero), Skeet Ulrich (as his hottest), Matthew Lillard, Rose McGowan (as a blonde), Henry Winkler, David Arquette and Courtney Cox. Some of the sequels are also available on Netflix.

As an obsessive fan of Marilyn Monroe something came to me the other night while watching one of her flicks on Netflix. Duh! She needs to have her own Online Movie Resource on my site.

If you aren’t familiar with this concept, what I do is scour the net for legal video on demand films starring a certain actor. Thus far I had only put together one for the amazing Johnny Depp last summer but a post of this nature is definitely needed for the lovely, talented Marilyn as well.

Enjoy!

Here are some fun St Patrick’s Day and Irish themed episodes of great shows that are currently on Netflix. Watch ’em while you are readying to go out, instead of going out or whilst recovering.

Click the show’s title to visit it on Netflix.

How I Met Your Mother

(above screencaps via hheavyheart)

"I'm awesome"

3-12 No Tomorrow

In this, basically the best drinking episode since season 1’s The Pineapple Incident (my personal favorite), Barney convinces Ted to go out and get crazy on St. Patrick’s Day. They decide to live like there’s no tomorrow. So Ted has an awesome time emulating Barney all night. Of course he is later chastised by Marshall. Meanwhile Robin third wheels it by spending the evening with Marshall and Lily at their new crooked apartment.

Futurama

3-6 The Luck of the Fryish

This episode of Futurama is amazing. Though Fry has been considered a loser during his adult life we learn that as a teen he had a lucky seven leaf clover. It allowed him to best his bro at everything. Of course when he ended up in the future he lost it. Now Fry has learned that his brother took the clover after his disappearance seemingly causing him to have become incredibly successful and celebrated. When the gang go grave robbing for the clover they learn the truth.

The Office

"It is the closest that the Irish will ever get to Christmas"

6-19 St. Patrick’s Day

Jo (Kathy Bates) is hovering in the office and forcing everyone to work overtime on St Patrick’s Day. Of course they are chomping at the bit to go out and party.

30 Rock

"Passing out and cursing, on St. Patrick Day? Is nothing sacred?"

3-14 The Funcooker

The episode is set up by Jenna and Tracy getting into trouble after a snafu during hosting a St Patrick’s Day parade. This leads Tracy to act out even more and Jenna to take experimental no sleep medicine. Meanwhile Jack is launching a tiny microwave (since the network is owned by GE, just like in real life) and is frantically trying to find a new name for the contraption.

Charmed

2-16 Murphy’s Luck

Amy Adams (who would later go on to make an awful romcom about traveling to Ireland) guest stars as Maggie Murphy, an Irish woman (and former do gooder) who has recently been deemed “the most unlucky woman in the city”. This, of course, makes her a great get for a St Patrick’s Day themed magazine article. Prue gets involved while trying to get hired at that magazine. The dude from The Mummy costars as a darklighter. Piper wants to let Dan down easy so she can be fully with Leo.

Saturday Night Live (The 1990s) (Not Currently Available)
A quick search turns up a variety of St Patty’s Day themed sketches from the 90s. Not all are great. However I did find a couple to showcase here. If you desire you can find more, most likely by looking for episodes around March 17th of each year on the 90s Netflix page.

Daily Affirmations: St. Patrick’s Day

Stuart Smalley informs a camera man (Chris Farley) that he has a drinking problem since he showed up to work drunk on St. Patrick’s Day.

Weekend Update Segment – St. Patrick’s Day
with Colin Quinn

Colin Quinn tells everyone that they need to have fun without drinking on St Patty’s Day.

Bonus
4-20 Whacking Day

Simpsons 8-18 Homer vs. the Eighteenth Amendment

9-19 Eternal Moonshine of the Simpson Mind

Simpsons 20-1 Sex, Pies and Idiot Scrapes
Simpsons 20-14 In the Name of the Grandfather

The Simpsons is not on Netflix (and probably never will be if they wish to keep their DVD sales strong). However, I recommend the above St. Patrick’s Day, Irish and drinking episodes. For more on Irish references in The Simpsons I recommend this site.

Guys, if I missed any great episodes please leave a comment letting me know.

This post is in the spirit of those year in review style posts. To be clear, these aren’t what I consider to be the best movies of 2011 out of every movie. Although a couple will also appear on that forthcoming list. These are just the best on Netflix. I know you need to watch something up to date every once in a while.

Technically some of these films are dated as being from 2010 but I’m going on when it was actually available to be seen by the majority of folks in the US. So I’ve included some that had a foreign, limited or festival release in 2010 but went wide on DVD in 2011.

Simply click the film’s title to be whisked away to it on Netflix.

DRAMA

Certified Copy (Copie conforme) (French) (Available Until 12/27/14)

"I'm afraid there's nothing very simple about being simple"

It’s certainly difficult to describe Certified Copy without giving away the movie. So let’s put it this way, a man and a woman who have a barbed attraction share a day together. Yes, it’s a talking movie. I loved it! The film stars Juliette Binoche and William Shimell.

A Little Help (Available Until 10/25/14)

After her husband’s passing a woman has to deal with raising her son and herself. This is a good little movie starring Jenna Fischer. Chris O’Donnell and Rob Benedict (Waiting) costar.

Passion Play (Available Until 07/20/13)

“Fuck normal”

Oh, Passion Play. I love the entire idea, casting, visual choices, et al of this film. Mickey Rourke stumbles into a traveling sideshow and meets a beautiful young woman (Megan Fox) who plays the part of an angel. Of course they fall for each other. Then there’s the fact that he’s tangled up with some other unsavory folks. The movie costars Bill Murray, Kelly Lynch and Rhys Ifans.

Limitless (Available Until 05/16/13)

Limitless is about a writer (Bradley Cooper) who ends up trying a drug that gives you hyper focus and confidence, or as I saw one commenter remark, something like a mix of Ritalin and Cocaine. Limitless was originally entitled Dark Fields and I get the feeling that it was supposed to be darker but it still works so well as this polished finished product. I’m still not sure of the character’s motivation but yeah, it was awesome!

Last Night (Available Until 01/01/13)

Last Night is about a married couple (Keira Knightley and Sam Worthington) who’ve been together for a while but are both tempted to cheat on the same night. Knightley’s character is definitely more fleshed out and relate-able. Ah, maybe that’s just to me, she’s a novelist who currently writes fashion pieces. Her possible fling is with a hot, foreign ex. Worthington mainly seems like a stock faithful husband who is confused and tempted. It’s by Eva Mendes though so it totally makes sense. In real life I believe cheating is basically the worst thing you can ever do but when it’s possibly going to be Worthington and Mendes getting it on, well, yes, I was egging them on. And Griffin Dunne plays a writer! I love when he does that.

A Beautiful Life (Mei Li Ren Sheng) (China/Hong Kong) (Available Until 12/13/12)

A booze and high heel loving real estate agent meets a police officer. She leads him on a bit while basically using him to do things for her. It’s one of those friend zone relationships. Do they get together? Ooh.

COMEDY

No Strings Attached (Available Until 06/22/13)

Well this is one of the two fuck buddies movies that were released in 2011 and it’s not the better of the two, that would be Friends with Benefits. However this is a decent, entertaining movie. Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher are two acquaintances who keep meeting. Eventually they hook up and then fall into a friends with benefits situation. I adore Portman playing a woman who is now trying to compartmentalize her life into just work (as a doctor) and sex after seemingly just working for a while. Kutcher works in TV. Kevin Kline and Cary Elwes costar. I feel like they were underused. Well Kline gets some scenes but is a bit cartoony. Elwes gets to say like two words. Ludacris, Lake Bell and Mindy Kaling costar.

Take Me Home Tonight (Available Until 05/16/13)

Topher Grace stars in this 80s themed comedy as a high school graduate (who was promising) but has been squandering his time since then. He runs into a crush (Amber Heard) and decides to lie his way into her good graces. The bulk of the film is set at a party involving a ton of great actors, Anna Faris (as his sister), Dan Fogler (as his sidekick), Chris Pratt (Faris’ IRL hubby as her onscreen fiance), Lucy Punch, Michael Ian Black and Michelle Trachtenberg. Funny flick. Check it out.

Potiche (Trophy Wife) (French) (Available Until 03/17/13)

Catherine Deneuve stars as the housewife of a jerk who runs a plant. She ends up taking it over. In doing so she meets up with a youthful dalliance (Gérard Depardieu) who opposes everything that her husband stands for. And it’s set in the 70’s! The costumes are awesome.

THRILLER/HORROR

Faces in the Crowd (Available Until 10/25/16)

Milla Jovovich witnesses a murder and then is attacked by the murderer. In the process she is injured resulting in Prosopagnosia, which is severe face blindness. She can’t recognize anyone. Not only does this interfere with her day to day life but now she has no way of identifying the criminal. Julian McMahon costars as a police detective who takes a shine to her.

Hobo with a Shotgun (Available Until 08/05/14)

Rutger Hauer stars as the title character, yes a hobo with a shotgun!, in this zany exploitation flick.

The Resident (Available Until 07/20/12)

Jeffrey Dean Morgan creepily stalks his tenant, solitary doctor Hilary Swank. Lee Pace and Christopher Lee costar.

Tucker & Dale vs. Evil (Available Until 12/29/14)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQOZHEYhVtU
This was so frickin’ funny but it wasn’t really promoted at all. Tyler Labine (Reaper, Mad Love) and Alan Tudyk (Firefly, Dollhouse) are two likeable hillbillies who’ve saved up to buy a vacation cabin in the woods. They are all excited about chilling out when they meet some yuppie college kids who only see them as scary backwoods stereotypes. A ton of hilarious deaths ensue.

Red State (Available Until 10/18/14)

Three high school kids go in search of tail but end up in a really fucked up situation in this Kevin Smith film. Supposedly Kyle Gallner actually had a real panic attack during filming. The cast also includes John Goodman and Michael Angarano. The movie drags a little at one point but it picks back up.

Dylan Dog: Dead of Night (Available Until 05/03/14)

Dylan Dog wasn’t that great or anything but I still feel the need to include it because there’s some good stuff in it. Brandon Routh is a supernatural PI who’s bestie, Sam Huntington, dies and is shocked to find out that he’s now one of the undead. Huntington always cracks me up. Routh’s chest is mesmerizing. Some of the undead stuff is pretty inventive. The big bad is way too Spawny though.

Insidious (Available Until 05/09/13)

The creative team behind the first Saw film, James Wan and Leigh Whannell, wrote and directed this flick. It’s a vintage feeling ghost story. A family has to deal with a haunting. Rose Byrne (barf) and Patrick Wilson play the parents. Eventually they bring in a team of Ghost Hunters type investigators (including Lin Shaye and Leigh Whannell). The movie has a great ambiance. I didn’t see that first little twist near the ending coming either.

…and now it’s time to have a Christmas movie marathon!

TV movies have (TV) next to the title.

Click the show’s title to visit it on Netflix.

Dreamworks Holiday Classics (2011)

The specials included are Merry Madagascar, Dragons: Gift of the Night Fury, Donkey’s Caroling Christmas-tacular and The Madagascar Penguins in a Christmas Caper. These specials would be a good fit if you have small children.

Mrs. Miracle (2009) (TV) (Available Until November 1, 2012)

Yes, I watched this flick cuz I still have a thing for James Van Der Beek. Two people who are grieving begin a relationship with the help of Mrs. Miracle (who may be some sort of guardian angel).

Snowglobe (2007) (TV)/Christmas Cupid (2010) (TV)

(Both Available Until November 1, 2012)

Both of these ABC Family Channel movies star Christina Milian. In Snowglobe she longs for romance and a traditional Christmas. She also has a loud, stubborn family. She ends up visiting a magical Christmas land that is inside of her snowglobe. She meets a guy there (Matt Keesler) but will she keep seeing him or fall for her new neighbor down the hall? Christmas Cupid is a take on A Christmas Carol. Milian is a workaholic who is haunted by a dead client who tries to get her to find love. Chad Michael Murray costars.

Holiday In Handcuffs (2007) (TV) (Available Until November 1, 2012)

Melissa Joan Hart is a struggling artist and waitress who’s told her Christmas crazed mother that her boyfriend would be joining them this year. Instead he dumps her. She snaps and kidnaps a slick looking Mario Lopez to pose as her boyfriend. Markie Post costars. This movie is so much fun.

Snow (2004) (TV)/ Snow 2: Brain Freeze (2008)(TV)

(Both Available Until November 1, 2012)

These movies were adorable. I watched them in one day, in fact back to back. Tom Cavanagh (Love Monkey) stars as a newbie Santa Claus who has had a reindeer stolen. While on a mission to retrieve it he meets and falls for Ashley Williams (Huff), who works at a zoo. She also has an evil, interfering ex who acts like a caricature of a character from The Most Dangerous Game. The first film features a lot of cute reindeer scenes. These would be fun for a family to watch together. In the second film Santa has amnesia. Both films operate under a time crunch. What will they do? Christmas is in a couple of days.

The Hebrew Hammer (2003) (Available Until September 29, 2012)

Yes, this one is about Hanukkah. I adore Adam Goldberg so I don’t know why it took me so long to get around to watching this movie. It’s hilarious and he’s fantastic in it. It’s a Jewish take on Blaxploitation movies. Goldberg has to stop the evil Andy Dick (the new Santa) who is trying to get rid of Hanukkah. The very talented Judy Greer costars. The cast also features Peter Coyote, Mario Van Peebles, Sean Whalen, Rachel Dratch and Tony Cox (Bad Santa).

Friday After Next (2002) (Available Until April 24, 2012)

This is my favorite in the Friday series and it’s set during Christmas. Ice Cube and Mike Epps get jobs as security guards. A robber who dresses as Santa Claus robs their home and steals from stores in their strip mall. Katt Williams and John Witherspoon costar.

The Santa Clause 2 (2002) (Available Until June 28, 2012)

In this sequel Santa Claus finds out about the wife clause which requires him to get married ASAP. This film stars Tim Allen, David Krumholtz, Judge Reinhold, Kevin Pollak and Molly Shannon.

Reindeer Games (2000) (Available Until January 1, 2013)

Ben Affleck’s character is fresh out of prison and has decided to pass himself off as his cellmate, who was having a relationship through the mail with Charlize Theron’s character, which seems like the thing to do. However he doesn’t know what is in store for him. Gary Sinise costars. (Also appears in Top Action Movies On Netflix Streaming)

Go (1999) (Available Until March 1, 2012)

This comedy is told in the Tarantino style of separate plot lines for intersecting characters, told out of order. I’ve watched this film so many times and it’s still fantastic. It takes place on Christmas Eve. The lead is played by Sarah Polley. She is a grocery store cashier who decides to do a one time drug deal to make her rent money. Timothy Olyphant plays the hottest fucking drug dealer. Other plot lines revolve around her fellow cashiers. One is a hot Brit (Desmond Askew) who goes to Vegas and ends up on the run from some really shady characters. Scott Wolf and Jay Mohr play adorable soap actors. Pretty much the only peeve I’ve ever had with the flick is that initially Katie Holmes is irritating in it. The film costars William Fichtner, Taye Diggs, Breckin Meyer, James Duval and Jane Krakowski. It was directed by Doug Liman. (Also appears in Top 1990s Movies about Twentysomething on Netflix Streaming)

The Hudsucker Proxy (1994) (Available Until January 1, 2012)

This Coen brothers film that was co-written by Sam Raimi stars Tim Robbins, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Paul Newman and Bruce Campbell. The inexperienced Robbins is put in control of a failing company as part of a stock scheme. However he invents the hula hoop which becomes hugely popular.

Miracle on 34th Street (1994) (Available Until February 1, 2012)/

Miracle on 34th Street (1947) (Available Until January 1, 2012)

Both of these are about a court case to prove the existence of Santa Claus. The 1994 remake was what caused my initial crush on Dylan McDermott. Elizabeth Perkins and James Remar costar in the remake.

Babes in Toyland (1986) (Available Until January 1, 2012)/
Santa Claus: The Movie (1985) (Available Until March 1, 2014)

A young Drew Barrymore finds herself in the magical Toyland on Christmas Eve. Keanu Reeves costars.
In Santa Claus: The Movie a toymaker finds out about the North Pole. Meanwhile an elf goes to work for a rival toy baron. Dudley Moore and John Lithgow star in this film.
