Everyone knows that male actors are chosen to star in superhero movies based on their intellect, talent, ability to appear menacing, ability to fill out a spandex jumpsuit. So let’s ogle, shall we?

Click any photo for the full size version. In some cases I used photos from the actual movie but not always. If I know what they are from I have mentioned that. I’ve included some upcoming superheroes, some villains and other related goodies.

Chris Evans-stars as Captain America/Steve Rogers in Captain America: The First Avenger and The Avengers (2012) and The Human Torch/Johnny Storm in Fantastic Four and Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer. Photos are from Captain America, a Fantastic Four movie and an earlier photo shoot.

Ryan Reynolds-stars as Green Lantern/Hal Jordan in Green Lantern, Deadpool/Wade Wilson in Deadpool (2014) and X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Hannibal King in Blade: Trinity. Photos are from Men’s Health Magazine, Blade: Trinity, X-Men Origins: Wolverine and The Amityville Horror.

Henry Cavill-stars as Superman/Clark Kent/Kal-El in Man of Steel (2013). Photo is from The Immortals.

“Teenagers are weird and you’re the weirdest”

This post is for the Film Experience‘s Hit Me With Your Best Shot series. Peggy Sue Got Married is the 1986 Francis Ford Coppola fantasy film about a woman who faints at her 25th high school reunion and wakes up as a teen during the week that she made the decisions that set up the rest of her life. It stars Kathleen Turner as Peggy Sue. I’m a big fan of Turner’s and recommend reading her autobiography.

As a child I was very open to everything (time travel/ghosts/witches/telepathy/religion/you name it). It’s not that I thought that it was all true but that there was the possibility that anything could be true. I am now completely cynical but I still like watching some of my childhood favorites, like Peggy Sue, which take me back to a simpler time. I later read that there was drama related to Nic Cage’s Gumby voice and other problems when they made the movie but that doesn’t matter to me.

It was difficult for me to choose a shot because the thing that I really dig about the movie is the dialogue. It seems like sometimes when there would be a reaction shot or a close up of the actor saying the awesome line that the camera is always pulled far away or focusing on someone else.

I chose this shot because even though Peggy originally feels like she is just trying to avoid marrying Nic Cage’s Charlie Bodell and playing the field with other guys she is also behaving like one of those women who takes on the interests of whatever guy she is with and loses some of herself. This is when she’s trying to seem cool to wannabe beatnik poet Michael Fitzsimmons.

"I'm a hip chick"

The funny thing is that often when you are watching a movie you are trying to figure it out for the characters but I have no idea what she should have done. She has this crazy obsessive possessive love with Cage who is at times either scary or ridiculous but then also adorable.

Of course there are a million other moments that I love in the movie, so here are some more screencaps.

They won't be but that's why we love you. Man this dress is so fab.

Something about dentists getting cocaine to treat patients strikes me as untrue but you have to have a photo of Jim Carrey with nose candy.

Jim Carrey stars as the highly intelligent Steven Russell in the dark comedy I Love You Phillip Morris. He is a middle aged man who comes out and then becomes a con man to support his extravagant lifestyle. Ewan McGregor costars as the love of his life, Phillip Morris. Leslie Mann costars. The film was adapted from the book, I Love You Phillip Morris: A True Story of Life, Love, and Prison Breaks by Steve McVicker, which is based on the real life of Steven Jay Russell.

Steven Russell: (picking up welcome mat) “You know what? I’m gonna take this mat cuz it’s a lie.”

Steven Russell: “Oh, did I forget to mention I’m gay, yeah, gay, gay, gay, gay, gay…”

Lindholm: “Do it man, cum in my ass”
Steven Russell: “And I did”

Steven Russell: “…actually no one ever really talks about this but being gay is really expensive”

Steven Russell: “Now I had a job but it was no where as good for living as high on the gay hog as I did.”

Debbie: “I just wonder is the gay thing and stealing something that goes hand and hand or?”
Jimmy: “What the fuck are you talking about?”

Steven Russell: (explaining prison to a new inmate) “You just need to know some ins and outs and you’ll be fine…see him, over there, him, anything you want from the outside, he’s the guy, candy, cigarettes, drugs, whatever, he’s the guy. Just keep in mind it’s gonna cost you a lot of money or you can suck his dick, your choice. You’re gonna catch a beating any day now, that’s just the way it is…just fight back, win or lose, just fight back or you can try to suck the guy’s dick, your choice.”
mail guy: “Letters, magazines, shit like that, it all goes through on my list, grandma sent you cookies, porn or brownies, whatever, you have to pay for it if you want to get it, $5 per item, or you can suck my dick”
Steven Russell: “It’s your choice”

Steven Russell: “My name is Steven Russell.”
Phillip Morris: “Nice to meet you Steven. My name is Phillip Morris.”

Phillip Morris: “I don’t go in that yard. You know what happens to blond haired, blue eyed queers in that yard.”

Steven Russell: “I hope the chocolate made it to you okay, check the TP.”

Phillip Morris: “Enough romance, let’s fuck”

Phillip Morris: “Did you pay to have him beat up?”
Steven Russell: “You hated that guy”
Phillip Morris: “Answer the question”
Steven Russell: “Yes”
Phillip Morris: “That’s the most romantic thing anyone has ever done for me.”

Steven Russell: (to a customer while working at a deli counter) “My boyfriend’s getting out of prison next week.”

Vera: “Can you still practice law having been to prison?”
Steven Russell: “Sure, why not?”

Phillip Morris: “I’m trying to be understanding honey, I am, but golf, why don’t you just eat pussy?”

Steven Russell: “…maybe it was because of my past or because they were the most fucking boring people on Earth but I’d been robbing them blind for months”

Phillip Morris: “I don’t care about the money. All I want is you. I just want us to be together.”

Steven Russell: “…oh, that’s Jesus on the other line, gotta go, bye.”

Phillip Morris: “Well you’re the lawyer, you figure it out. Oh my god, you’re not even a fuckin’ lawyer, are you? Fuckin’ liar.”

Phillip Morris: “…I don’t even think you know who you are so how am I supposed to love something that doesn’t exist, you tell me that”

Ugly Betty
Recently Ugly Betty had it’s Series Finale. I was a fan of the show during the first season. I knew I had to check it out because I had been a fan of America’s from Real Women Have Curves and I loved Eric Mabius in Black Circle Boys when I was a teen. Over the next few years it was a little too over the top. I only watched it occasionally. I thought that the finale was really good but they could have made it 2 hours. You can watch it on ABC.

I just love this pic.

FILM
Netflix
Flicks now streaming on Netflix include Moon (Sam Rockwell), A Scanner Darkly and Tape. I highly recommend all three of these films.

TRAILERS
I Love You Philip Morris-I’ve been dying to see this movie starring Jim Carrey as a newly gay con man who falls for Ewan McGregor. Unfortunately the release date keeps getting pushed. It was March, then April, now it’s fall. At this rate the DVD won’t be out until 2011, sigh.

Dinner For Schmucks-This flick starring Paul Rudd, Steve Carell and Zach Galifianakis is a remake of the 1998 French film the Dinner Game which is very funny. It’s about a group who try to outdo each other by inviting the dumbest guest to dinners. This one looks like a winner.

The Killers-I’m not really sure about this one. It’s an action romantic comedy starring Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl. She hasn’t made a good romantic comedy yet.

Beastly-This is getting press because of Mary-Kate Olsen appearing in it. It’s like MTV’s take on the Beauty and the Beast fable. I think I would have loved this as a preteen. It could be a big hit.

The Other Guys-Buddy cop comedy starring Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell as two doofy cops. At least it looks better than Cop Out.
