Recently the newest designer collaboration for Target hit shelves, 3.1 Phillip Lim. I’m not going to act like I’m in the know on this line. I simply am not. However after reading others’ blogs on the subject I had to peruse the pieces for myself. There were quite a few that caught my eye online. Luckily for me my small town rarely completely sells out of anything edgy, which means that by the time I strolled in today I was still able to check out many of the items in person.
Our local Target had both the animal print dress and skirt, which were my favorite online picks, so I knew I had to try them on. On impulse I also tried on a tiger tee and a floral dress. There were also thin, somewhat dressy tanks, sequin applique tops, shells and sweaters available, none of which interested me. The black bags in both medium and large sizes were on display as well. I like them but I bought myself a nice bag a few months ago and it’s still in excellent condition. Plus they were a bit pricey for something that don’t scream ME. For instance, my current bag has pops of hot pink throughout.
To give you an idea of sizing I typically wear a size 10-12 pant, 38C bra and a large in Junior’s (which of course varies by brand and if a line is actually Misses instead).
3.1 Phillip Lim for Target Knit Dress in Animal Print
This dress has been in my online cart since I first saw it but I was not taken with it IRL. I did not realize that it had a very prominent ruching down one side of it. I don’t find this flattering to my body. I tried it on in a large, which fit, I would say that it’s true to size. It is 57% cotton, 38% rayon and 5% spandex. I think it looks better on me in the photos than in real life but I would not have been comfortable wearing it. I fp think that it’s at a great price point of $29.99.
3.1 Phillip Lim for Target Men’s Cotton Jersey Tiger Graphic Tee $19.99, 3.1 Phillip Lim for Target Silky Skirt in Animal Print $29.99
Yes, I do like these random pieces styled together. (You can’t tell from the above photos but the print of the skirt actually features a beautiful blue around the spots, not black, as it seems).
I’m a shirt addict so when I saw this tee I had to try it on. I later found out that it’s part of the men’s collection, which makes perfect sense because as I was trying it on I though, “awesome, this is super comfy and flattering like a men’s tee”. It’s just a black tee with a graphic print so it shouldn’t be anything special but once I had it on I had to have it. It’s soft (100% cotton) and fun. There was only one of these in my store, a size medium. This is typically the size men’s graphic tee that I buy when I want a flattering but somewhat looser fit. I can tell that I definitely could have worn this in a small as well.
The skirt? Well the leopard print seems to pop so much better on it than on the dress. I’m guessing that this is due to the fabric (polyester). They only had this skirt in a 4, 8 and 14. So I tried on the 14. I found it true to size. If I had a choice I would have went with it in a 12, the size I often wear bottoms in. As you can see in the photo where I have the tee pulled up, this skirt is high waisted, which I’m not crazy about as someone with a low waist to hip ratio (i.e. I often feel like I have no waist). Although the skirt feels like it’s made well the particular one that I had in my hand already had a loose thread (just putting that out there). Due to the waist, the fact that I don’t often wear skirts and I’m trying to save money I eventually passed on this skirt. Okay, I did have it in my cart while shopping for other essentials in the store but I finally, regretfully put it back. This skirt also comes in a navy blue but I’m all about the animal print.
3.1 Phillip Lim for Target Shirt Dress in Floral Print $39.99
I saw one of these dresses hanging on the rack and impulsively decided to try it on. It didn’t really seem like my style but I thought, why not? It turns out that on the hanger it’s not visually interesting while on your body, it’s exactly the opposite. Unfortunately this was only left in an XL. It definitely fits true to size so I would need a large in this. It was too loose in the waist. If you can find this in your size snap it up quickly. The asymmetrical skirt combined with the shirt dress front and an Asian floral print is so unique. It’s 63% cotton, 33% nylon and 4% spandex. The detailed construction and extraordinary style make it worth the $39.99 price tag. I kind of wish I would have bought it anyway and just added a belt.
