Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe

This is my first comic book review, and I wanted it to be special. I consider it a milestone, if you will. It’s something that, to me personally, I can look back and say to myself, “Yeah, I’m pretty damn happy I did that.” Today, I am reviewing the Merc with a Mouth, Deadpool.

Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool

When the Deadpool movie came out around Valentine’s Day, I really wasn’t that into the hype. I’ve been a fan of Deadpool for years, and I thought that making a movie out of it would be hard to do. Casting, funding, and general plot are all very necessary to make any good movie great. I was just plain blown out of the water with the results. The movie was so great and I had an amazing time. I really recommend this movie. Thank you, Ryan Reynolds, for doing an amazing job of doing this anti-hero justice.

Now, the graphic novel I’m reviewing is actually much, MUCH darker. Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe is one gritty comic book. Ladies and gentleman, this book is One Hundred Percent Yes.

Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe was written by Cullen Bunn, drawn by Dalibor Talajic, and colored by Lee Loughridge. The comic is based around an alternate reality in which Deadpool is apprehended by the X-Men to quote unquote “make him better”. Only after typing quote unquote before putting quotes, do I realize that it creates a grammar paradox that is sure to kill us all. Only one more reason to make my voice HEARD!!!!!! Anyway, as you may figure out for yourself, the experiment does NOT go as planned. This leaves Deadpool with a third voice in his head, supposedly, killing the other two voices inside of him and…and eating them. Introducing mental cannibalism. I didn’t even know that was a thing.

I don’t want to give too many spoilers to those who have not read the book and probably want to in the near future, so, spoil it, I will not. I will, however, tell you my personal opinion of the book. It’s amazing. The art style alone in this comic leaves me breathless. The combined efforts of Dalbor and Lee, who I am assuming by their names are bound to make an awesome cop duo in an action movie, have created what I think is one of the best comics I have personally read in a long, long time. The colors just pop, and the lines are crisp and clear. It just makes me want to sit at a desk and draw some bloody sketches of my own superhero. Oh, did I mention blood? There is so much blood, death, and gore. As a personal fan of that shit, I have to say, bravo, my good gentleman, bravo.

It’s a quick read. It only took me about a half hour to finish. This comic book is comprised of about eight volumes. I highly recommend picking it up.

bar n

What was there to do, she pondered. Seven hours until I’m outta here. Not much to do, okay, not really anything to do, except sustenance. She did need to eat. Dying phone (plus no physical map either, fucking present), what’s a girl to do? Remember a previous time in this city, but of course.

It’d been a year, yeah, things change. She found it though, she fucking found it! Her yummy Mexican eatery. Overwhelming arrival? YES! Last year they had mentioned switching to a sports bar theme, but she didn’t know if that’d really go over. It totally did, like gangbusters, in fact.

She asked the hostess if she could get grub at the bar. After a yes, she made her way there. Fuck waiting on a table for one. Fuck that for sure.

What awaited her? A super “IMPORTANT” national sports event. Yeah, not her style. Looking back, it’d seem more calculated than it really was, but she scoped out the bar. She spotted “kindred” souls but it was a flock, a flock of dudes, not her style. She was more like a guy, go for the unencumbered one. Plus, he was hot.

A bit of chattering (not quite flirting, though), but it seemed there was a viable specimen. Cute and willing to chat. Don’t be too eager with food, her inner monologue instructed, that comes off poorly for women, stupid double standards.

Eventually, she got her grub on. More importantly, she was able to chat up the hot, single dude at the bar, conveniently seated directly to her right.

After a few brewskis, hours of a sport she just could not get into and some light flirting, she made a move and it fucking worked. SCORE!!!

They “hung” for a few hours. It was nice, it was sweet, it was sexy. She had no regrets. It was a nice time. That can be an anomaly in times like that.

She walked briskly, keeping her head down. It was in sight now and she was almost there. It always seemed an odd jaunt but it’s not as if she had other pressing tasks at hand, the apartment was clean.
