This post is in the spirit of those year in review style posts. To be clear, these aren’t what I consider to be the best movies of 2011 out of every movie. Although a couple will also appear on that forthcoming list. These are just the best on Netflix. I know you need to watch something up to date every once in a while.

Technically some of these films are dated as being from 2010 but I’m going on when it was actually available to be seen by the majority of folks in the US. So I’ve included some that had a foreign, limited or festival release in 2010 but went wide on DVD in 2011.

Simply click the film’s title to be whisked away to it on Netflix.

DRAMA

Certified Copy (Copie conforme) (French) (Available Until 12/27/14)

"I'm afraid there's nothing very simple about being simple"

It’s certainly difficult to describe Certified Copy without giving away the movie. So let’s put it this way, a man and a woman who have a barbed attraction share a day together. Yes, it’s a talking movie. I loved it! The film stars Juliette Binoche and William Shimell.

A Little Help (Available Until 10/25/14)

After her husband’s passing a woman has to deal with raising her son and herself. This is a good little movie starring Jenna Fischer. Chris O’Donnell and Rob Benedict (Waiting) costar.

Passion Play (Available Until 07/20/13)

“Fuck normal”

Oh, Passion Play. I love the entire idea, casting, visual choices, et al of this film. Mickey Rourke stumbles into a traveling sideshow and meets a beautiful young woman (Megan Fox) who plays the part of an angel. Of course they fall for each other. Then there’s the fact that he’s tangled up with some other unsavory folks. The movie costars Bill Murray, Kelly Lynch and Rhys Ifans.

Limitless (Available Until 05/16/13)

Limitless is about a writer (Bradley Cooper) who ends up trying a drug that gives you hyper focus and confidence, or as I saw one commenter remark, something like a mix of Ritalin and Cocaine. Limitless was originally entitled Dark Fields and I get the feeling that it was supposed to be darker but it still works so well as this polished finished product. I’m still not sure of the character’s motivation but yeah, it was awesome!

Last Night (Available Until 01/01/13)

Last Night is about a married couple (Keira Knightley and Sam Worthington) who’ve been together for a while but are both tempted to cheat on the same night. Knightley’s character is definitely more fleshed out and relate-able. Ah, maybe that’s just to me, she’s a novelist who currently writes fashion pieces. Her possible fling is with a hot, foreign ex. Worthington mainly seems like a stock faithful husband who is confused and tempted. It’s by Eva Mendes though so it totally makes sense. In real life I believe cheating is basically the worst thing you can ever do but when it’s possibly going to be Worthington and Mendes getting it on, well, yes, I was egging them on. And Griffin Dunne plays a writer! I love when he does that.

A Beautiful Life (Mei Li Ren Sheng) (China/Hong Kong) (Available Until 12/13/12)

A booze and high heel loving real estate agent meets a police officer. She leads him on a bit while basically using him to do things for her. It’s one of those friend zone relationships. Do they get together? Ooh.

COMEDY

No Strings Attached (Available Until 06/22/13)

Well this is one of the two fuck buddies movies that were released in 2011 and it’s not the better of the two, that would be Friends with Benefits. However this is a decent, entertaining movie. Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher are two acquaintances who keep meeting. Eventually they hook up and then fall into a friends with benefits situation. I adore Portman playing a woman who is now trying to compartmentalize her life into just work (as a doctor) and sex after seemingly just working for a while. Kutcher works in TV. Kevin Kline and Cary Elwes costar. I feel like they were underused. Well Kline gets some scenes but is a bit cartoony. Elwes gets to say like two words. Ludacris, Lake Bell and Mindy Kaling costar.

Take Me Home Tonight (Available Until 05/16/13)

Topher Grace stars in this 80s themed comedy as a high school graduate (who was promising) but has been squandering his time since then. He runs into a crush (Amber Heard) and decides to lie his way into her good graces. The bulk of the film is set at a party involving a ton of great actors, Anna Faris (as his sister), Dan Fogler (as his sidekick), Chris Pratt (Faris’ IRL hubby as her onscreen fiance), Lucy Punch, Michael Ian Black and Michelle Trachtenberg. Funny flick. Check it out.

Potiche (Trophy Wife) (French) (Available Until 03/17/13)

Catherine Deneuve stars as the housewife of a jerk who runs a plant. She ends up taking it over. In doing so she meets up with a youthful dalliance (Gérard Depardieu) who opposes everything that her husband stands for. And it’s set in the 70’s! The costumes are awesome.

THRILLER/HORROR

Faces in the Crowd (Available Until 10/25/16)

Milla Jovovich witnesses a murder and then is attacked by the murderer. In the process she is injured resulting in Prosopagnosia, which is severe face blindness. She can’t recognize anyone. Not only does this interfere with her day to day life but now she has no way of identifying the criminal. Julian McMahon costars as a police detective who takes a shine to her.

Hobo with a Shotgun (Available Until 08/05/14)

Rutger Hauer stars as the title character, yes a hobo with a shotgun!, in this zany exploitation flick.

The Resident (Available Until 07/20/12)

Jeffrey Dean Morgan creepily stalks his tenant, solitary doctor Hilary Swank. Lee Pace and Christopher Lee costar.

Tucker & Dale vs. Evil (Available Until 12/29/14)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQOZHEYhVtU
This was so frickin’ funny but it wasn’t really promoted at all. Tyler Labine (Reaper, Mad Love) and Alan Tudyk (Firefly, Dollhouse) are two likeable hillbillies who’ve saved up to buy a vacation cabin in the woods. They are all excited about chilling out when they meet some yuppie college kids who only see them as scary backwoods stereotypes. A ton of hilarious deaths ensue.

Red State (Available Until 10/18/14)

Three high school kids go in search of tail but end up in a really fucked up situation in this Kevin Smith film. Supposedly Kyle Gallner actually had a real panic attack during filming. The cast also includes John Goodman and Michael Angarano. The movie drags a little at one point but it picks back up.

Dylan Dog: Dead of Night (Available Until 05/03/14)

Dylan Dog wasn’t that great or anything but I still feel the need to include it because there’s some good stuff in it. Brandon Routh is a supernatural PI who’s bestie, Sam Huntington, dies and is shocked to find out that he’s now one of the undead. Huntington always cracks me up. Routh’s chest is mesmerizing. Some of the undead stuff is pretty inventive. The big bad is way too Spawny though.

Insidious (Available Until 05/09/13)

The creative team behind the first Saw film, James Wan and Leigh Whannell, wrote and directed this flick. It’s a vintage feeling ghost story. A family has to deal with a haunting. Rose Byrne (barf) and Patrick Wilson play the parents. Eventually they bring in a team of Ghost Hunters type investigators (including Lin Shaye and Leigh Whannell). The movie has a great ambiance. I didn’t see that first little twist near the ending coming either.

Recently, as I’ve mentioned, I bought some pieces from the now defunct Jovovich-Hawk for Target line from eBay. The other pieces were so cute that I had to get the polka dot babydoll dress as well. This particular item was from the Go International re-release earlier this year. It’s so cute and comfy. If you ever end up picking one up on eBay you can size down a size cuz it’s so billowy.

I was trying to find a way to make it look a little more fitted but it was not flattering with any of my belts. Since it was jacket weather on that particular day I was able to just throw my old trusty bomber over it. Apparently the Miley Cyrus Walmart line that it’s from has now completely folded so I am going to be SOL in the future. I have such an attachment to this jacket that I’m feeling a bit like John Cusack at the moment. The same can be said about the boots that I wore with it.

I actually wanted to wear knee high boots that day but when I dug out my two pairs they were super worn out. I was hoping to do a DIY project with them but all of the craft stores and craft sections of stores around here are apparently gone. I added my sweater leggings which kept the slight chill off.

These photos are from the release of the higher end line and I believe that the dress that Milla is wearing is from her original line (and most likely the inspiration for the Target relese).

Jovovich-Hawk for Target Dobby Shirt-eBay, black Bongo jeas-Kmart, Peeping Tom floral lace cami-Dots, teal necklace by Crystalline Dreams-gift, belt-Dots, Clarks boots-thrifted

In 2008 actress Milla Jovovich also had a thriving upscale clothing line called Jovovich-Hawk, which she started in 2003. In 2008 she and business partner Carmen Hawk collaborated with Target as part of their Go International Collection. The line was fun with a boho hippie bent. Earlier this year Target rereleased a few dresses from the line.

I wasn’t in the loop about this line then but ever since I heard about it a bit later I’ve been meaning to buy a piece via eBay. Last week I finally bought two pieces (super cheap!). I got the above Dobby Top and a very sweet corset dress that you will see in another post soon. It’s a bit sheer. I could have just wore a black bra underneath but instead I went with a cami. Then I added my black Bongo jeans, a belt from Dots, my trusty boots and a super cute necklace from Crystalline Dreams (also seen here). I really like the top. It’s thin and breathes. It has a flowy hem but I decided to make it look a bit more structured with the belt.

Are you looking for the best romances with nudity on Netflix Streaming? Then you came to the right place. Netflix calls them Steamy Romances. A steamy romance has a similar feel to an erotic thriller. It’s sexy, it’s dangerous and it’s naked. However in an erotic thriller you’re usually worried about getting murdered while in a sexy romance you’re just worried about getting in trouble at work or losing your heart.

Most photos are much larger. Click for the full size versions. They make great backgrounds for your computer.

Hemingway’s Garden of Eden (2008)

I must admit that I don’t know much of Hemingway aside from what I picked up in this film and Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris. This is a thoroughly captivating movie about passion and artistic truth. Mena Suvari plays the wife of the main character (a writer that I assume Hemingway based on himself). They end up in a threeway relationship with another woman. Suvari is simply marvelous in this film. She’s daring and tempestuous. She shocks the general population with her will to act masculine whenever she fancies. Plus she engages in a battle of wills with her hubby.
Jack Huston and Matthew Modine costar.

Rated R for Strong sexual content, nudity and some language

Angel (2007)

Angel is a British romantic drama. It’s about a poor young woman, Angel, who grows up to be a rich romance novelist through sheer perseverance. I had it in my queue for a while because I adore Sam Neill, who costars. Once I began watching it though I realized that he only has a supporting role, as her publisher, as it’s fairly recent and he’s getting on in years.

I was amused by the film’s melodramatic soapiness despite the lead actress’ off putting demeanor. Random people online have described this as a satire or a spoof of period romances but there is nothing to suggest that the filmmakers intended that to be so. I think that people are just projecting what they want to see.

After she gains fame she employs a female assistant who seems to be in love with her but falls for the assistant’s womanizing artist brother. The fantastic thing about this character is that he is played by X-Men: First Class’s Michael Fassbender. Yes, he is also super hot in this. When he and Angel start getting down we get to see his fine bod.

Not Rated

The Wings of the Dove (1997)

I remember in the ’90s when this was released and was quite popular. Some how I put off watching it until this year. This was probably a good thing as I can definitely appreciate it more now as a big Helena Bonham Carter fan. This British romantic period drama is heart wrenching. Plot: “An impoverished woman who has been forced to choose between a privileged life with her wealthy aunt and her journalist lover, befriends an American heiress. When she discovers the heiress is attracted to her own lover and is dying, she sees a chance to have both the privileged life she cannot give up and the lover she cannot live without.”-IMDB.com)

Rated R for sexuality.

Captives (1994)

Captives is a British romantic crime drama about a dentist, Julia Ormond, and a prison inmate, Tim Roth, that she meets while working in prison. Roth gets out weekly to attend a school program and they begin getting hot & heavy. Public bathroom sex scene, FTW!

Rated R: A strong sex scene, language and some violence.

Wild Orchid (1990)

“Ask him if he understands what tremendous pleasure women get looking at naked men.”

Wild Orchid is about a young woman, Carrie Otis, discovering her sexuality. The “plot” is pretty lame and boring, as often happens with these types of films, but who cares? You get Otis having her sexual awakening, trying to decide on whether or not to bone Mickey Rourke and the older and more sexually free Jacqueline Bisset (Nip/Tuck) guiding her.

Rated R: May include adult themes, adult activity, hard language, intense or persistent violence, sexually-oriented nudity, drug abuse or other elements.

Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! (1990)

“You want to fuck me, right? Get it over with.” “Relax. We’ll fuck when the time comes.”

This Pedro Almodovar movie is bananas. While the other films are dramas this is a comedy, an incredibly goofy comedy. The flick is about a young Antonio Banderas (then 30, but looking way younger) who is obsessed with a recovering drug addict porn star who is filming her first real movie (which is shlock). Of course there are times when he has to restrain her. Eventually she falls for him in a definite case of Stockholm Syndrome. It reminds me of a 1970s or 1980s Harlequin novel at times. If you removed the over the top goofy subplot of the horror film that she’s making you could basically shoot the rest of it as a freaky ass erotic thriller instead. The sex scene doesn’t come quickly but is long and graphic. Ah, Banderas buns!

Rated NC-17: For a scene of strong adult sensuality with nudity (aka fucking).

9 1/2 Weeks (1986)

Plot: “An erotic story about a woman (Kim Basinger), the assistant of an art gallery, who gets involved in an impersonal affair with a man (Mickey Rourke). She barely knows about his life, only about the sex games they play, so the relationship begins to get complicated.” (from IMDB.com). I actually prefer the prequel because of my love for Paul Mercurio.

Rated R: May include adult themes, adult activity, hard language, intense or persistent violence, sexually-oriented nudity, drug abuse or other elements.

NOT CURRENTLY AVAILABLE

Return to the Blue Lagoon (1991)

At first glance you may wonder about this choice. Yes, it is PG-13 but it’s sexy. If you are a Charmed freak, like me, then you will love this. Brian Krause, aka Leo, stars in this at the yummy age of 22. Milla Jovovich costars and was 16 at the time. It’s about 2 children who aren’t related but grew up together alone on a tropical island, so at first it would seem like they are siblings. The film is about what happens when they start to come of age and don’t know what to do with their new hormones. Of course they eventually decide to get busy on the regular. I know, it seems a bit creepy the first time you watch it. Then society tries to intervene. I’ve never seen the original film because it doesn’t interest me.

Rated PG-13: Some material might not be suited for children 13 and under.

White Palace (1990)

“All I know is that when I’m not with you I’m a total wreck.” “And when you are with me?” “I’m a different kind of total wreck.”

Amazing movie! This flick is about a sexy middle aged woman (Susan Sarandon) who ends up meeting a hot depressed yuppie (James Spader) a couple of times and starting an, at first, purely sexual relationship. The film’s title is a take off of White Castle, in reference to the famous restaurant. Sarandon’s character works at a take off of this chain, White Palace in the film, due to legal difficulties.

Not only do these two have to deal with their age difference but also their class difference. Sarandon keenly feels what it’s like to struggle to make it while Spader is living the good life. Sarandon is also battling her own demons and has an affinity for Marilyn Monroe. Heck yeah, a cougar who’s obsessed with Marilyn and Spader? I totally sympathize. The moral of White Palace is give a good blow job and he’ll fall in love with you. Oh and it’s not rape if you look like Susan Sarandon.

Rated R: Adult content, graphic language, nudity, strong sexual content.

Dream Lover (1994)

Admittedly Dream Lover is not a great movie. However it’s sexy and disturbing and stars the amazing James Spader, ah. He quite quickly marries the always icy Madchen Amick after they meet. She seems to be hiding a disturbing past.

Rated R: May include adult themes, adult activity, hard language, intense or persistent violence, sexually-oriented nudity, drug abuse or other elements.

Damage (1992)

“All through dinner, I had one thought, one desire. To touch you. To hold you.”

Wow, just wow, this is one of those films that I can’t believe that I hadn’t seen before. The creepily sexy Jeremy Irons starts a tawdry affair with the fiance of his son, Juliette Binoche, in this British flick. Worst dad ever! There is a lot of hot, sex in this. Rough too. He really likes to manipulate her neck. I was worried that he would break it. Irons has some type of government job, which I suppose was supposed to have be controversial, considering his extracurricular activities, back then, but is super commonplace now. Even the posters/video covers were awesomely provocative!

Rated R: Strong sexuality, and for language.

Summer Lovers (1982)

I have mentioned this movie before because fuck yes for a young, full frontal Peter Gallagher! Darryl Hannah and Peter Gallagher are young lovers who vacation in Greece and fall into a threesome relationship with a local woman.

Rated R: May include adult themes, adult activity, hard language, intense or persistent violence, sexually-oriented nudity, drug abuse or other elements.
