Yes, there are more Disney movies than the following available on Netflix, but in keeping with the original theme of this series, these are the ones that I truly enjoy.

poca 1
Pocahontas (1995)/Pocahontas 2: Journey to a New World (1998)

Pocahontas was released at the tail end of my childhood, bookending into the dreaded teen years. Luckily it was awesome enough to draw me in even though I’m sure I acted too mature for it at the time. Pocahontas was inspired by the life of the famous Native American, known for working in harmony with the early colonists of Jamestown, VA. While history indicates that she did save the life of John Smith, they were not in a relationship. However that is not the film’s take, which I quite enjoy. The basic plot is the early colonists trying to take over the Native American’s land. The love story between Pocahontas and John Smith throws a monkey wrench in the works.

Watching the movie in my youth I was drawn in by the music (Tia Carrere has a beautiful voice) and seemingly magical properties of the Native Americans. While watching it early this year I not only was able to enjoy that but also the comedy. Seriously, rewatch it as an adult and guffaw at the awesomely fab songs by the baddies who openly admit their plans to steal the Native American’s land. Plus, the villain’s henchman is super flamboyant. The animal sidekicks (on both sides) are also a treat.

I have not had a chance to watch the sequel yet but I assume it’s some fun.

NBC
The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
I’m not sure if there’s anyone who isn’t at least passingly familiar with Tim Burton’s stop motion masterpiece at this point. The super quick rundown is that a skeleton king who resides in Halloweentown discovers Christmas. Fun ensues when he gets things a bit wrong.

dumbo sad

Dumbo (1941)
I identify to much with the character of Dumbo to have watched it all that often. Dumbo is an unpopular elephant who is criticized for his large ears. Aw. Even before I hit adolescence and understood this type of cruelty I still found it a sad tale. The film involves Dumbo going to visit his mother. It also includes Dumbo accidentally getting drunk and crows that I (and many others) have found to be racially demeaning. So yeah, if you are planning to watch Dumbo with a child, I’d recommend using it as a way to teach acceptance to those who are different/unpopular but be prepared for questions on his inebriated state and why “the crows talk like that”.

So, what are your Disney favorites that can be found on Netflix? Yes, Mulan is in my queue.

Scary Movie (2000)
scary movie

The first Scary Movie spoofed many of the films listed on this list, as well as others that are not currently available on Netflix. Though it was officially released in 2000, it definitely belongs here. Anna Faris and Shannon Elizabeth costar in this Wayans brothers comedy that is mainly based on the original Scream flick. Fun fact: Scream’s working title was Scary Movie.

Teaching Mrs. Tingle (1999)
teaching mrs tingle

The first Kevin Williamson penned movie on this list is the black comedy Teaching Mrs. Tingle. Katie Holmes, Marisa Couglan (Super Troopers), Barry Watson (Sorority Boys) and Helen Mirren co-star. The simple plot is about teens who want revenge on their bitchy teacher, the always sexy Helen mirren.

The Faculty (1998)
the faculty

This high school alien invasion flick from Robert Rodriguez is a must see. It’s The Body Snatchers meets The Breakfast Club. A truly fab 90s cast, including Josh Hartnett, Elijah Wood and Shawn Hatosy, is able to give life to the teen archetypes presented here. The teachers in the film are played by so many amazing actors that I’m not even going to list them, just watch it.

Disturbing Behavior (1998)
disturbing behavior

Disturbing Behavior is a creepy look at high school jock mentality. Something (and or someone) is changing these small town teens into shiny, 50’s style goodie two shoes, except when they get horny and then homicidal. Katie Holmes shines as sexy “trash” in this Kevin Williamson penned guilty pleasure. James Marsden (X-Men) costars as the new kid.

Bride of Chucky (1998)
bride of chucky

Definitely my favorite Chucky flick, this one is over the top fun. Jennifer Tilly is a boobaliscious, goth trailer chick who she gets her wish and brings back her ex, now in Chucky’s body, of course. Things get completely zany when he also transfers her soul to doll form. A young Katherine Heigl and John Ritter (as her angry dad) costar. Also keep an eye out for Alexis Arquette who is amazing in this.

Scream (1996)
scream poster

You’re most likely familiar with Wes Craven’s Scream. A hot cast of well known actors mixed with up and comers appear in this slasher movie that is so in the know that Jamie Kennedy’s character even lists what must happen in a horror flick in one of the definitive scenes. The cast is rounded out with Neve Canpbell (as the hero), Skeet Ulrich (as his hottest), Matthew Lillard, Rose McGowan (as a blonde), Henry Winkler, David Arquette and Courtney Cox. Some of the sequels are also available on Netflix.

I’ve been a huge fan of Kevin Smith ever since I first rented a VHS copy of Mallrats from the since closed Hollywood Video. It was then that I finally took the advice of my issues of Premiere Magazine and rented Clerks. I then forced everyone that I knew to watch Clerks. So it’s only natural that I devote an entire Netflix post to Smith’s work.

Click the film titles to be taken directly to the film on Netflix.

Jay and Silent Bob Go Down Under (2012)
down under

I have not had a chance to check this special out yet but it’s a Kevin Smith special with Jason Mewes (ah), I don’t think you can go wrong with that. It was filmed in Sydney, Australia.

Comic Book Men (2012 Seasons 1-2)
comic book men

I haven’t had cable in a few years so I had not heard of this series. It’s basically AMC’s geekier version of Pawn Stars. I didn’t think I’d be into it. I’ve never been a fan of comic books. It’s not like I never tried reading them, but they just aren’t my thing. I enjoy comic book films and the characters’ stories though.

I’m very happy that I decided to give this a chance as I love it. I can’t help marathoning the episodes. I’m a flea market/yard sale/ebayer, who used to collect action figures so it’s actually a great fit for me. Each episode recaps something interesting that took place at Kevin Smith’s comic book store in Jersey, Jay & Silent Bob’s Secret Stash. The guys who work in the store discuss these events with Kevin on every ep, so yes he’s always on the show. Plus you get appearances from other View Askew actors such as Jason Mewes and Brian O’Halloran.

Red State (2011)
red state

Red State has nothing to do with the View Askew universe. After Cop Out, Smith went in yet another direction with this movie. This horror/thriller is very unique, so much so that I don’t like to give too much away about the plot. It starts out with a group of teen guys (including the yummy Kyle Gallner) talking sex at school. It soon turns into a very creepy horror flick involving religion. The movie costars Michael Angarano, Anna Gunn, Stephen Root, Kevin Pollak, Marc Blucas and John Goodman.

Kevin Smith: Burn in Hell (2011)
burn in hell

If you want to know more about the above movie, Red State, then check out this Kevin Smith appearance.

Kevin Smith: Too Fat For 40 (2010)
40

This particular Smith special includes many interesting stories about Zack and Miri Make a Porno, Cop Out and weed, among other issues. It was filmed in Jersey.

4.3.2.1 (2010)
4321
Smith plays the character of Big Larry in this movie. The plot of this British crime thriller involves four female friends and diamond thieves.

Phineas and Ferb (2010)
phineas

Smith made an appearance on an episode of this childrens’ animated series about two stepbrothers during their summer vacation. Smith portrays Clive Addison, a special effects guru. This episode also included an appearance by Seth MacFarlane.

Zack and Miri Make a Porno (2008)
miri mewes

I can’t even explain how much I love this movie. Wait, yes I can, just go check this out. Though not a part of the Jersey trilogy this is, to me, a classic Kevin Smith film. It’s an awesome, filthy comedy about down on their luck characters. Plus it’s set in Pittsburgh (I’m from Southwestern PA). It stars one of my favorite actors, Seth Rogen, and Elizabeth Banks as best friends who decide to make a porno together since they are in desperate need of money. It includes so many other awesome actors as well, such as Jason Mewes, Craig Robinson and Justin Long.

This Film Is Not Yet Rated (2006)
rated

If you are a movie buff then you probably have some questions about how the movie ratings system operates. It has a lot to due with dollars. Find out more in this documentary.

Small Town Gay Bar (2006)
gay bar

Kevin Smith was an executive producer of this documentary about “The story of community in the Deep South that is forced to deal with the struggles of ignorance, hypocrisy and oppression.” (via IMDB.com). I haven’t seen this but Kevin mentions how he got involved in this project during his Burn in Hell special.

Comic Book: The Movie (2004)
comic book the movie

Mark Hamill stars in this comedy about “The relationship between Hollywood and comic book culture is lambasted in this mockumentary as a beloved heroic character is rung through the studio system.” (via IMDB.com). This isn’t really up my alley but I plan on trying to give it a go one day.

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001)
strike back

“What the fuck is the internet?”-Jay
Jay and Silent Bob is the most in your face, self referential of the View Askewniverse flicks. Jay and Silent Bob get caught up in a diamond heist/animal theft while trying stop Miramax from making a movie. The movie is based on the comic Bluntman and Chronic (from Chasing Amy) who were based on Jay and Silent Bob. Basically everyone from the past Jersey flicks is in this and often play multiple characters and/or themselves.

Donnie Darko (2001)
darko

Kevin Smith is credited with a special thanks credit on this movie. He is also included on the DVD commentary. I’m not actually a big Donnie Darko fan. It was interesting but it’s just not a favorite of mine. The movie stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a teen having Doomsday visions.

Scream 3
scream 3

Scream 3 is definitely not the best Scream movie in the series. Serial killer survival Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) visits Hollywood since they are making her story into a movie. Smith appears as Silent Bob on a Hollywood backlot in a cameo role.

Law & Order (2000)

I’m not at all interested in this crime drama show. However Smith did appear in the 17th episode of season 10 from 2000 entitled, “Black, White and Blue” as “Tony’s Wife’s Nephew”. The plot of this particular episode involves racial issues and the police.

Chasing Amy (1997)
amy

I haven’t watched Chasing Amy as much as Smith’s other movies because it’s more serious. It’s still awesome, of course. Ben Affleck and Jason Lee play comic book creators who meet Amy (Joey Lauren Adams). She becomes involved with Affleck’s character even though she had previously identified as a lesbian.

Good Will Hunting (1997)
will hunting

Smith was a co-executive producer on this movie that helped launch his friend Ben Affleck’s career. Matt Damon stars as a janitor who’s actually a genius at math. This touching Gus Van Sant flick deals with classism and love.

Clerks (1994)
clerks

Ah, Clerks, the movie that started it all. This hilarious, dialogue heavy comedy is about two friends who work at adjoining convenience and video stores. It’s set during a typical day as a clerk, based heavily on Smith’s own young life. Dante Hicks (Brian O’Halloran) and Randal Graves (Jeff Anderson) were so popular that not only was there later a cartoon version, Clerks: The Animated Series but also, eventually, Clerks 2, which is so fuckin’ funny. Plus Kevin Smith has announced plans to make a Clerks 3 in the future, woot!

By now many have already done so much legwork in this area and I’m not ready for a rewatch yet. So please enjoy these playlists and tracklist that I’ve found online. As an obsessive fan of Marilyn Monroe something came to me the other night while watching one of her flicks on Netflix. Duh! She needs to have her own Online Movie Resource on my site.

If you aren’t familiar with this concept, what I do is scour the net for legal video on demand films starring a certain actor. Thus far I had only put together one for the amazing Johnny Depp last summer but a post of this nature is definitely needed for the lovely, talented Marilyn as well.

Enjoy!
