Scary Movie (2000)
scary movie

The first Scary Movie spoofed many of the films listed on this list, as well as others that are not currently available on Netflix. Though it was officially released in 2000, it definitely belongs here. Anna Faris and Shannon Elizabeth costar in this Wayans brothers comedy that is mainly based on the original Scream flick. Fun fact: Scream’s working title was Scary Movie.

Teaching Mrs. Tingle (1999)
teaching mrs tingle

The first Kevin Williamson penned movie on this list is the black comedy Teaching Mrs. Tingle. Katie Holmes, Marisa Couglan (Super Troopers), Barry Watson (Sorority Boys) and Helen Mirren co-star. The simple plot is about teens who want revenge on their bitchy teacher, the always sexy Helen mirren.

The Faculty (1998)
the faculty

This high school alien invasion flick from Robert Rodriguez is a must see. It’s The Body Snatchers meets The Breakfast Club. A truly fab 90s cast, including Josh Hartnett, Elijah Wood and Shawn Hatosy, is able to give life to the teen archetypes presented here. The teachers in the film are played by so many amazing actors that I’m not even going to list them, just watch it.

Disturbing Behavior (1998)
disturbing behavior

Disturbing Behavior is a creepy look at high school jock mentality. Something (and or someone) is changing these small town teens into shiny, 50’s style goodie two shoes, except when they get horny and then homicidal. Katie Holmes shines as sexy “trash” in this Kevin Williamson penned guilty pleasure. James Marsden (X-Men) costars as the new kid.

Bride of Chucky (1998)
bride of chucky

Definitely my favorite Chucky flick, this one is over the top fun. Jennifer Tilly is a boobaliscious, goth trailer chick who she gets her wish and brings back her ex, now in Chucky’s body, of course. Things get completely zany when he also transfers her soul to doll form. A young Katherine Heigl and John Ritter (as her angry dad) costar. Also keep an eye out for Alexis Arquette who is amazing in this.

Scream (1996)
scream poster

You’re most likely familiar with Wes Craven’s Scream. A hot cast of well known actors mixed with up and comers appear in this slasher movie that is so in the know that Jamie Kennedy’s character even lists what must happen in a horror flick in one of the definitive scenes. The cast is rounded out with Neve Canpbell (as the hero), Skeet Ulrich (as his hottest), Matthew Lillard, Rose McGowan (as a blonde), Henry Winkler, David Arquette and Courtney Cox. Some of the sequels are also available on Netflix.

Unfortunately most of my favorite musicals are no longer available on Netflix. I haven’t had time to watch all of the below films but they are in my queue and I plan on checking them out in the future. Plus I’ve heard good things about them.

Footloose (2011)
footloose 2011

I have not watched this remake yet. I do enjoy Julianne Hough and dance movies (ala Step Up though). Hot Donna told me it was decent and I will eventually get to watching it. It’s a remake of the 80’s original. You probably know the gist, teens aren’t allowed to dance in some weird hick town, so they rebel by dancing.

Velvet Goldmine (1998)
vg

Yes, I fucking adore Velvet Goldmine. I went into it with a love of Ewan McGregor and gay men and just came out someone even more awesome, if that’s possible. It taught me about glam rock and Oscar Wilde and accessorizing with copious amounts of glitter. Plot, you ask? Christian Bale plays a young reporter tasked to find out what happened to a supposedly dead bisexual glam rock star Brian Slade (basically a fictionalized version of David Bowie). Yes, that’s Ewan rocking out above as Curt Wild (inspired by Iggy Pop). The amazing cast also includes Eddie Izzard.

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

nightmare burton

Have you ever been inside of a Hot Topic? Yes, then you’ve probably seen Jack Skellington before. So you know his visage but have you seen the movie? Well hopefully, it’s been out for fucking ever and it’s amazing. Tim Burton’s stop motion puppet musical is a gothic love tale about Halloween Town. Halloween Town is home to a bunch of awesome ghoulies. The movie is about how the sweet Jack Skellington stumbles onto Christmas Town and tries to bring their traditions back to his town. He also meets Sally, whom he falls for.

Footloose (1984)
footloose orig

Yes, this is the original Footloose starring Kevin Bacon. Yes, it’s about a town that’s outlawed dancing. I was born a year before this film’s release. I grew up with it being overplayed on TV and Bacon even goofing on his performance on other shows. So I’m not like a big fan or anything but he sure could dance.

The Muppet Movie (1979)

muppets

Plot: “Kermit and his new found friends trek across America to find success in Hollywood, but a frog-legs merchant is after Kermit.” (via IMDB.com) I haven’t watched The Muppet Movie since I was a small child but Miss Piggy is an idol of mine so I really need to get on that.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968)
chitty

Plot: “A hapless inventor finally finds success with a flying car, which a dictator from a foreign government sets out to take for himself.” (via imdb.com) I’m never watching this movie again. That’s not an insult, I just watched it so much as a child that I couldn’t do it again. Yeah, my dad is a big Dick Van Dyke fan.

Carmen Jones (1954)
carmen sm

Plot: “Love, passion, betrayal and tragedy. Carmen Jones is an adaptation of Bizet’s legendary opera, Carmen. It tells the story of a young, free spirited woman called Carmen Jones whose great beauty is the object of many men’s desires. However, Carmen sets her sights on young army officer Joe, who is engaged to his sweetheart, Cindy Lou. Joe quickly succumbs to Carmen’s charms , forsaking his Cindy Lou, thus beginning the tragic love story.” (via IMDB.com) It seems wrong that I’ve never gotten around to watching this as it’s considered a classic film but I’m so behind on anything pre-1960s. Not a great excuse, I know.
Stars Dorothy Dandridge.

There’s No Business Like Show Business (1954)
show bus

Plot: “Molly and Terry Donahue, plus their three children, are The Five Donahues. Son Tim meets hat-check girl Vicky and the family act begins to fall apart.” (via IMDB.com). Okay it’s not really my cup of tea but you know I love Marilyn Monroe. She performs the following songs in this film, Lazy, Heat Wave and After You Get What You Want, You Don’t Want It.

A Star Is Born (1937)
star born

Plot: “A young woman comes to Hollywood with dreams of stardom, but achieves them only with the help of an alcoholic leading man whose best days are behind him.” (via IMDB.com) Okay, this is one of three versions of A Star Is Born and I haven’t seen it yet. I’ve only seen the Streisand version because, c’mon I love her. I am totally going to give this one a try though. In case you are curious, no I haven’t seen Garland’s version yet either, which is insane.

As an obsessive fan of Marilyn Monroe something came to me the other night while watching one of her flicks on Netflix. Duh! She needs to have her own Online Movie Resource on my site.

If you aren’t familiar with this concept, what I do is scour the net for legal video on demand films starring a certain actor. Thus far I had only put together one for the amazing Johnny Depp last summer but a post of this nature is definitely needed for the lovely, talented Marilyn as well.

Enjoy!

Talk of Angels (1998) (Available Until June 01, 2016)

Back during my Vincent Perez phase I bought this on VHS. It’s decent as far as his flicks go. He doesn’t have a great Spanish accent (which is odd since he grew up all over the place) but I’ll overlook any problemos in that area. This movie is about an Irish woman who goes to Spain and becomes a governess. She finds political pressure in Spain, just as she did in Ireland. Polly Walker, Frances McDormand and Penelope Cruz costar.

Certified Copy (2010) (French) (Available Until December 27, 2014)

It’s about a man and a woman who have a barbed attraction and share a day together. Fantastic! The film stars Juliette Binoche and William Shimell.

Another Day (2001) (Available Until October 15, 2013)

Did you ever want to see what it would be like to see Prue and Cole in love? Lucky that you came across this flick then. Shannen Doherty is in love with Julian McMahon but ends up going back in time to shortly before her former, late lover’s death.

Passion Play (Available Until July 20, 2013)

I love everything about this film, the idea, casting, visual choices, etc. Mickey Rourke stumbles into a traveling sideshow and meets a beautiful young woman (Megan Fox) who plays the part of an angel. They fall for each other. Their love unravels since he’s tangled up with some other unsavory folks. The movie costars Bill Murray, Kelly Lynch and Rhys Ifans.

Good Dick (2008) (Available Until June 29, 2013)

Good Dick is listed under romcoms but it’s anything but. The movie is about a man who works at a video store and falls for an introverted woman who rents a lot of porn. It’s a very touching drama that I definitely recommend. Marianna Palka (also the director), Jason Ritter, Martin Starr and Tom Arnold star in this flick.

Conversations with Other Women (2006) (Available Until February 15, 2013)

Conversations with Other Women is a personal favorite. I own and have watched this film and the special features often. (I have entertained thoughts of making independent films and it was shot on a DV camera). The writing is top notch. It’s about a woman (Helena Bonham Carter) who is attending a wedding and meets up with a man (Aaron Eckhart) that she shares special chemistry with.

Last Night (Available Until January 1, 2013)

Last Night is about a married couple (Keira Knightley and Sam Worthington) who’ve been together for a while but are both tempted to cheat on the same night. Knightley’s character is definitely more fleshed out and relate-able. Worthington mainly seems like a stock faithful husband who is confused and tempted (by Eva Mendes though so it totally makes sense).

A Beautiful Life (Mei Li Ren Sheng) (China/Hong Kong) (Available Until December 13, 2012)

A booze and high heel loving real estate agent meets a police officer. She leads him on while using him to do things for her. It’s one of those friend zone relationships that actually goes somewhere.

Hope Floats (1998) (Available Until November 15, 2012)

Sandra Bullock, Harry Connick Jr, Gena Rowland and Kathy Najimy star in this film about love and starting over. It’s about what happens when your husband is a piece of shit so you have to heal and start again.

Random Hearts (1999) (Available Until November 01, 2012)

Random Hearts is definitely a different kind of movie. It has a slow build and it’s long. Plus it’s very sexy without being very sexual. This Sydny Pollack movie stars Harrison Ford (ahhh!) and Kristin Scott Thomas as two people whose spouses both die in a freak plane accident. They fall for each other while grieving, but her job gets in the way. Charles S. Dutton, Bonnie Hunt, Dennis Haysbert, Richard Jenkins, Peter Coyote and Dylan Baker costar.

The Fabulous Baker Boys (1989) (Available Until November 01, 2012)

It took me a long time to get around to catching this flick but since I’ve seen it I must heartily recommend it. Jeff Bridges and Beau Bridges star as struggling jazz musicians who hire the sexy, talented Michelle Pfeiffer as their singer.

Where the Heart Is (2000) (Available Until November 01, 2012)

No matter how many times I see Where the Heart Is I will never stop being amazed by it. I read the book back in the day and it was incredibly schmaltzy and just okay. However the movie is totally made by the amazing, believable performance of Natalie Portman as Novalee Nation (I know). She’s a pregnant teen whose bf is such a dick that he ditches her at a Walmart. However she makes the best of things, befriends a bunch of really great people and finds her passion in life (and love) while bringing up her son. Ashley Judd, James Frain, Stockard Channing, Joan Cusack and Sally Field costar.

Suburban Girl (2007) (Available Until August 15, 2012)

The first time that I saw Suburban Girl I was dissapointed. However I don’t blame the film, I blame US Weekly. During filming all of the on set picks made it seem like it was fun and upbeat. Then it was released and marketed as a romcom. However it’s actually more dramatic. The flick is about a book editor (Sarah Michelle Gellar) who starts dating a much older man (Alec Baldwin).

Dirty Dancing (1987) (Available Until July 01, 2012)

Patrick Swayze stars as the older dance instructor that teen Jennifer Grey falls for, while developing her dirty dancing skills.

The Edge of Love (2008) (Available Until June 30, 2012)

I originally rented this on a whim and it definitely turned out to be a good idea. It’s a period drama set in wartime London about the lives, loves and friendship between two women played by Keira Knightley and Sienna Miller. Matthew Rhys and Cillian Murphy costar.

At First Sight (1999) (Available Until July 01, 2012)

At First Sight was mercilessly bashed upon it’s release but I’ve always loved it. It was actually put down for not being realistic while it was based on a true story and Val Kilmer shadowed the guy that it was actually about (I know, so wrong). Kilmer is a blind masseuse who finds love with Mira Sorvino. She helps him experience new things when he undergoes an operation that gives him his sight back but will it last? Kelly McGillis, Steven Weber, Nathan lane and Bruce Davison costar.

Here are some fun St Patrick’s Day and Irish themed episodes of great shows that are currently on Netflix. Watch ’em while you are readying to go out, instead of going out or whilst recovering.

Click the show’s title to visit it on Netflix.

How I Met Your Mother

(above screencaps via hheavyheart)

"I'm awesome"

3-12 No Tomorrow

In this, basically the best drinking episode since season 1’s The Pineapple Incident (my personal favorite), Barney convinces Ted to go out and get crazy on St. Patrick’s Day. They decide to live like there’s no tomorrow. So Ted has an awesome time emulating Barney all night. Of course he is later chastised by Marshall. Meanwhile Robin third wheels it by spending the evening with Marshall and Lily at their new crooked apartment.

Futurama

3-6 The Luck of the Fryish

This episode of Futurama is amazing. Though Fry has been considered a loser during his adult life we learn that as a teen he had a lucky seven leaf clover. It allowed him to best his bro at everything. Of course when he ended up in the future he lost it. Now Fry has learned that his brother took the clover after his disappearance seemingly causing him to have become incredibly successful and celebrated. When the gang go grave robbing for the clover they learn the truth.

The Office

"It is the closest that the Irish will ever get to Christmas"

6-19 St. Patrick’s Day

Jo (Kathy Bates) is hovering in the office and forcing everyone to work overtime on St Patrick’s Day. Of course they are chomping at the bit to go out and party.

30 Rock

"Passing out and cursing, on St. Patrick Day? Is nothing sacred?"

3-14 The Funcooker

The episode is set up by Jenna and Tracy getting into trouble after a snafu during hosting a St Patrick’s Day parade. This leads Tracy to act out even more and Jenna to take experimental no sleep medicine. Meanwhile Jack is launching a tiny microwave (since the network is owned by GE, just like in real life) and is frantically trying to find a new name for the contraption.

Charmed

2-16 Murphy’s Luck

Amy Adams (who would later go on to make an awful romcom about traveling to Ireland) guest stars as Maggie Murphy, an Irish woman (and former do gooder) who has recently been deemed “the most unlucky woman in the city”. This, of course, makes her a great get for a St Patrick’s Day themed magazine article. Prue gets involved while trying to get hired at that magazine. The dude from The Mummy costars as a darklighter. Piper wants to let Dan down easy so she can be fully with Leo.

Saturday Night Live (The 1990s) (Not Currently Available)
A quick search turns up a variety of St Patty’s Day themed sketches from the 90s. Not all are great. However I did find a couple to showcase here. If you desire you can find more, most likely by looking for episodes around March 17th of each year on the 90s Netflix page.

Daily Affirmations: St. Patrick’s Day

Stuart Smalley informs a camera man (Chris Farley) that he has a drinking problem since he showed up to work drunk on St. Patrick’s Day.

Weekend Update Segment – St. Patrick’s Day
with Colin Quinn

Colin Quinn tells everyone that they need to have fun without drinking on St Patty’s Day.

Bonus
4-20 Whacking Day

Simpsons 8-18 Homer vs. the Eighteenth Amendment

9-19 Eternal Moonshine of the Simpson Mind

Simpsons 20-1 Sex, Pies and Idiot Scrapes
Simpsons 20-14 In the Name of the Grandfather

The Simpsons is not on Netflix (and probably never will be if they wish to keep their DVD sales strong). However, I recommend the above St. Patrick’s Day, Irish and drinking episodes. For more on Irish references in The Simpsons I recommend this site.

Guys, if I missed any great episodes please leave a comment letting me know.
