So basically New Year’s Eve always sucks. However, eventually, after this video, I called people who actually care about me. Sometimes you gotta hit up your town back home to find those who care. I mean, as much as I want to make friends here, it’s not like I’m going to know them forever anyway, so I guess it’s not that big of a deal.

RTR NYE 3

Since many of you are fashion mavens I had to share this fab New Year’s Eve deal from Rent the Runway. Rent the Runway is a very cool service that lets you rent designer dresses/gowns from them for your special events for a fraction of the retail price. For instance, say you love a dress that retails for $400 but you could never just shell that out, well you could rent it for $50 for your birthday.

Right now they are doing an incredible sale. They have dresses at the super low price point of $20.14 per rental for New Year’s Eve (get it, it’s turning from 2013 to 2014, oh my!). They also have special $30.14 and $40.14 deals, which is super low for these styles.

Okay, included in this post are my favorites. When it comes to designers you have the likes of Nicole Miller, Lela Rose, Kate Spade New York, Lilly Pulitzer, Badgley Mischka and Anna Sui. When it comes to fit you have body hugging or flowy and forgiving. Style wise you can be sexy or sweet. Some picks are more classic than daring, if that’s your bag. I’m a bit partial to the sparkly dresses myself.

Please be aware that other styles are available these are just my top picks for someone with my style preferences who wears my size dress (10-12). Make sure to browse the whole selection, especially if none of these pop out at you.

To sign up for Rent the Runway, feel free to use my referral link, here. When you do so you will get a $20 rental credit applied to your account (as will I, FYI).

For the best price I’d recommend signing up for their PRO membership first. ($29.99 per year, includes free insurance & shipping on all orders, plus a free birthday dress!). If you are not a PRO member you will still have to pay insurance and shipping on your super sweet $20.14 dress.

Now on to delivery times (for those of us outside of Manhattan). For standard shipping you need to order by 3PM ET Christmas, Wednesday, December 25, 2013. If you are okay with rush shipping fees you can wait until Thursday, December 26th. This is to get an extended rental. You choose 12/27 as your delivery date and 1/2 as your return date. If you are more of a last minute dame you can plan to receive your dress on 12/30 by ordering it by 3PM ET on 12/27 and choosing standard shipping.

Do you already have your NYE outfit picked out? If not, which of these would you go with?

Well as Ted would say on How I Met Your Mother “the thing about New Year’s Eve is that it sucks”.

This year I was friendless (not unusual) and feeling ill. However I know from past experience that if I don’t leave my house on NYE I will be super depressed and down on myself for not trying. I live in the middle of nowhere. Most bars were closed. They do this sometimes on major holidays to avoid the sloppy drunks who may damage their bar or cause a fight. I had 2 choices-the fun gay bar in town or a bus trip to Wheeling Island Casino. The problem with the bar is that it’s in town and I hate this town. I went to Wheeling last New Year’s Eve. The big problem then was that it was incredibly overcrowded. You couldn’t even get a slot machine about halfway through the night. Plus it would have cost a lot more to take the bus trip. So I decided on the local bar.

A few days before I started feeling ill. This means that my attempts to by a dress were incredibly half assed. I was only in the stores for a few minutes, felt dizzy and left. I also never got around to buying pantyhose. So on NYE I was stumbling around my house sweaty and nauseous trying on every dress I could find. I assumed I’d go with an old slinky black dress that resembles something a ballerina would wear and jazz it up with the accessories. (BTW-how cute is this nail polish that I won from Agent Lover) I couldn’t find that. I eventually settled on this cute Betsey Johnson dress I’d scored on eBay a few months prior. It was incredibly cheap because it was used and the straps were torn. So I cut them the rest of the way off and attached them to a new, cute purple bra with some small safety pins. Yay, it worked!

I didn’t get there until almost 11:30, which was fine with me. I figured that I’d stay an hour. That way I could at least be out with people when it turned midnight, I know. I had a couple of drinks, there was a drag show, a DJ was spinning great dance music and they gave us champagne for midnight. It was pretty nice. At almost 12:30 when I was getting ready to leave some girl I went to high school (the bane of my existence-see here) with came up and started talking at me. She was with her friend who was also a classmate.

So now I had a dilemma. If I left right then (which was my plan) it would look like I was letting people run me out of there. However if I stayed I was worried I’d start knocking back shots of tequila and make an ass of myself. So instead I figured I’d get one more drink, stay another hour and then leave. Um, the drink was a Four Loko. I did enjoy watching some hot gay guys dance while I tried to finish the huge drink. Eventually I did and left.

Of course that thing hit me when I got home. It was good because I remembered to take outfit pictures. I had already removed my jewelry because it was itching me though. Oops. However it was bad because I talked to someone I always argue with and argued with them, shockers. xd. Plus I posted unintelligible things online (that I later deleted).

So I went to bed feeling like my shitty 18 year old self but at least I was covered in lotion with glitter.

I am not suggesting that you stay home and watch movies on New Year’s Eve if you want to go out. In fact, it’s always a bad idea for me. However if that’s what you and possibly a SO or friend have decided to do here are my top picks. Plus you could also watch one before you head out or after you return.

Chaos Theory (2007)

“Are you trying to kill yourself?” “Well, obviously, but I think it’s going to take a little while.”

Chaos Theory is a dark comedy starring Ryan Reynolds. He’s an efficiency expert. The character is somewhat similar to Ben Stiller’s in the abysmal Along Came Polly, except you know, this is an enjoyable movie. He manages his life down to the minute and doesn’t take risks.

One day his schedule is thrown off by his wife (Emily Mortimer). Once that happens he ends up performing a good deed that is misinterpreted by his wife. Then he finds out a big secret about her that leads to him making lists that say things like “Kill Myself”. Instead of doing that he goes wild and does or tries to do a bunch of risky acts that he’d normally never do.

The always amazing Stuart Townsend costars as their playboy best friend (who’s also in love with Reynolds’ wife). Sarah Chalke also makes an appearance. The movie is told using a timeframe of 3 important times in his life, one is the New Year’s Eve that begins his relationship with his wife. In addition to that it touches big time on trying to alter yourself which is very popular this time of year. It sucks that the film didn’t get a wide release. I bet Reynolds was really excited about showing his range in it.

Swingers (1996)

"kiss me you fool". Sorry that's not in the movie, just my imagination.

“How about if I wait six weeks to call. I could tell her I found her number while I was cleaning out my wallet, I can’t remember where we met. I’ll ask her what she looks like and then I’ll ask her if we fucked. How about that? Would that be money?”

No, Swingers is not a New Year’s movie. It’s not set on New Year’s Eve or any specific holiday (that I’m aware of). I suggest it for New Year’s because it’s now sort of a New Year’s tradition for me to watch it around this time of year. One year when I couldn’t go out on NYE I decided to watch some of my favorite movies instead. One of those was Swingers. I think it’s a decent New Year’s choice because it involves a bunch of partying and trying to pick people up.

It’s about a group of friends who are trying to break into acting. Jon Favreau wrote the film and stars in it as the sappy one who is also trying to find love. This was Vince Vaughn’s breakout role. Ron Livingston and Heather Graham costar.

This movie also appears in Top 1990s Movies about Twentysomethings on Netflix Streaming.

…and I love this fun rave New Year’s Eve look from xsparkage as well.

I’m not positive how I’m doing my makeup tonight but my guess is that it will end up looking somewhat similar to how I wore it in my Burlesque Photo Set.
