AnnaSophia Robb as Carrie Bradshaw

“Sex isn’t everything”

I’m not going to go on and on about what is different from the novel in this or subsequent posts. You can call em recaps if you want. I’m also not comparing this Carrie to the future in Carrie in terms of history or continuity. Those of use who are hard core Sex and the City fans have had to notice during rewatches that SATC wasn’t always big on sticking with a specific backstory.

This episode sets up the basic plot. Carrie is a high schooler who has taken a weekend interning job in NYC. Her little sister Dorrit is rebelling. Their mother has died and their dad is uptight. We also meets Carrie’s school friends and her new NYC friend. Plus we get introduced to her love interest.

“if only I could escape my brain”
“I collect people”
“I’ve never met anyone gay before”

The City (yes the best parts take place in the city. As an adult I don’t really need to watch a ton of teen specific stuff. Plus it’s NYC! c’mon)

sister fight

that green and white dress that eventually gets passed down to Dorrit. It’s so reminiscent of Sarah Jessica Parker’s coat, as seen here.

so true people do treat you weird when they know a relative of yours has died

Maggie’s hair!

Carrie’s first kiss is in a pool!

the creation of the Carrie bag

the blue and pink party dress Carrie fondles in Century 21

the inclusion of Interview Magazine!

the pink, polka dot party dress

Temptation by New Order (which was used amazingly in Trainspotting, of course)

Carrie’s leopard cardigan

her first journal entry, with the window framing her

“hot dog your keyhole”

Carrie acts like a narc. Ooh, Dorrit has pot. BFD

Sebastion isn’t at all what I’d envisioned (I know, I said I wouldn’t mention the book, but, ugh). Plus he’s not attractive enough and is preppy looking. This guy is supposed to be a bad ass.

Carrie’s dad seems way too square to have come up with the idea of her working in New York City.

Carrie helping her new friend steal, no

She should have worn the pantyhose at work but then not to the party. Duh. That is some disrespect there.

the “artists’ table” in NYC doesn’t seem at all like a group you’d want to hang out with

Dorrit goes missing

Now let’s have this sink in folks. I know that we miss Sex and the City. I even loved both movies, which isn’t the general consensus out there. When I first heard about the prequel books I was weary. Since then I’ve read the first, The Carrie Diaries, and ended up totally into it.

I don’t read high school books but once she gets into wanting to be a writer and having a love of odd fashion I completely identified with her. I haven’t gotten around to reading the second book, Summer in the City, yet but I definitely plan to.

When I heard about the show I wasn’t super jazzed. Would the girl that they chose to play Carrie be super preppy? Would it be anything like the book? Luckily the answers to those questions are answered by the following trailer, no and yes.

My initial thoughts after having just viewed that are the following: I do like how the beginning of the trailer seems faithful to the book.

SPOILER FOLLOWING (if you haven’t read the first book)

However it’s missing Samantha! What the fuck? Now I know that she’s introduced at the end of the book but it seems like they have replaced her entirely with this other older, together woman, Larissa. Arggh, you can’t replace Samantha, ya just can’t!

I’m still looking forward to the show though. I hope that it is on for at least a couple of seasons and has time to find its voice and audience.

The Carrie Diaries will premiere on The CW in January of 2013.

Last month I picked up a couple of great deals and I finally got around to wearing them last week. I found this cute striped top at Kmart. I loved Kristen Wiig’s striped top that she wore during the plane scene in Bridesmaids (as seen below). However I didn’t go looking for a similar top as something that boxy would not flatter my figure. I have seen similar styles offered from StyleMint but I couldn’t justify spending $30 on a tee shirt that might not even fit me well. When I saw this on the clearance rack at Kmart I thought it probably wouldn’t look great on me but why not try it on since I was there? I actually found it really cute. I felt a French vibe when I put it on. I think many associate stripes with France, not just me, (see also, the time Carrie went to France on Sex and the City, below).

Plus I found these adorable Missoni for Target pumps on sale at Target. They were 70% off. When the line was released I limited myself to two pieces so I passed these by even though I dug them. I considered going with some cowboy boots for this look but I really love these so I’ll do that next time.

I usually wear a bag out before I move on to the next one. So even though I bought this Lyon bag from ShoeDazzle last summer I hadn’t started using it until last week. It’s so cute. Then I added some skinny jeans, a faux pearl and fabric necklace and a snake ring. It’s a simple, casual look but I dug it.

(There are currently ShoeDazzle 1/2 off Groupons available. Skip to the end to snag yours.)

A few days ago I was thrilled to see that ShoeDazzle had released their own interpretation of the classic Hermes Birkin bag, the Lyon. I really wanted the red and am also loving the green. I took a day to think about it since I try not to buy many bags. When I checked the next day it was already sold out in green. I snagged one in red. They are now also out of red. You can currently choose from camel or black I also recommend getting on the waitlist (they call you when they get them in) and/or stalking it (checking the page frequently for restocks) in the color that you want. I have bought many of my ShoeDazzle purchases after they’ve sold out and come back in stock so I can tell you that it’s very likely that you could still get your first color choice if you are adamant. All colors are currently in stock.

The actual Birkin bag is a celebrity favorite, having been featured on Sex and the City and on the arms of many stars. I am also a big fan of the Hermes Kelly bag, as seen in Le Divorce. I even had a jelly knockoff of it that I bought at Dots a few years back. Who knows? Maybe ShoeDazzle will interpret that one in the future.

ShoeDazzle is also currently featuring a really cute wedge with a bow, Tillie in brown, black or pink (my favorite). It is their interpretation of the Christian Louboutin Miss Cristo.

JustFabulous (also known as JustFab) is currently showcasing this lovely shoe, the Makeeda in blush, blue, red or black. It is their version of the Christian Louboutin Clou Noeud. I am really feeling blush but the black would go with so many outfits and the blue is so unexpected.

ShoeDazzle and JustFab are monthly shoe clubs. This means that you are charged a set amount ($39.99) whether or not you have ordered by a certain date each month. You can choose to spend this on any item that they are selling. You are not required to actually make a purchase each month. Just skip that month by the specified date. It’s very easy. You know that I wouldn’t participate if it were difficult. You can sign up for ShoeDazzle here and you will get about 20% off of your first purchase (making it $32). You can sign up for JustFab by going here and your first purchase will only be $31.96 (20% off).

Update-May 2012-Lyon is back in cute candy colors. Tillie is also back in the original styles and new fun prints, I favor the orange. I’m pretty sure Makeeda is also still available.

If you are new to ShoeDazzle you can go buy a Groupon and get your first pair or bag for only $19 (1/2 off). You can buy 1 per person + 1 as a gift. This is only good on new ShoeDazzle accounts. The reason that I am listing multiple Groupons is that once a sale ends you usually are able to use it in 24 hours. So if you are in a hurry then you would want to purchase the earliest now or maybe you get paid in a day or 2 and need to wait until then to buy it. There is also the possibility that you would need to buy more than one. (6 hours left) (1 day and 5 hours left) (2 days and 5 hours left)

I wore this outfit when Donna and I went to see Sex and the City 2 on my birthday, last Sunday (May 30th). The dress is by Isabel Lu. I bought it from Gilt is a members only invitation site that sells designer clothes at awesome prices. This dress was about 70% off of the regular price. You can sign up here. My sister is wearing my Sex and the City shirt that I bought in 2008 when the first film was released. It was from Sarah Jessica Parker’s now defunct Bitten line. It was sold at Steve & Barry’s. I remember when I saw the line’s debut on Oprah. The problem was the clothes weren’t that interesting. I guess I was hoping for Carrie style but that’s actually Patricia Field’s style not SJP’s. I thought the movie was really fun. Go here to hype my look if you are on LookBook.
