project almanac cast

When I first started seeing trailers for Project Almanac, I was definitely curious. This time travel flick about selfish high schoolers looked pretty darn good. The trailer sucked you in with a group of friends using time travel for their own gain. Then it turns kind of creepy, when you see that time travel can, oops, screw things up.

Unfortunately, the movie definitely didn’t live up to the trailer for me. I thought maybe it was one of those instances with two many writers and/or directors, nope. One director and two writers. I’m currently exhausted and didn’t even feel like writing this review. I thought, I’ll find a review by someone with similar views and share that. I CAN’T FIND ONE! What? So, basically, others have issues with the science behind the film, but embraced what disappointed me. My views are a bit different.

Yes, there are definitely times that I thought, no, just no, that doesn’t make any science. Keep in mind, that I’m not scientifically minded. I’m pretty likely to not know if someone is using the correct piece when they are building something. I also don’t mind shutting off my mind to enjoy something fun, to an extent.

project almanac time machine

However, unlike others, I don’t believe that you need to see this JUST because it’s a time travel movie. As if, a dearth of movies means that poor ones should just exist to fill the void.

Have you seen the trailer? No?

Okay, now you have. You don’t even need to watch the movie. That is everything that you need to know and it doesn’t have to work, because it’s a trailer. You are supposed to want more.

What happens? Okay, a guy, his sister (a pretty, thin blonde who’s being bullied, *rolls eyes*), and his likeable friends build a time travel machine based on his late father’s plans. Later, a “hot”, popular girl joins their group and decides that she’s an integral part of it. IMHO, she is not.

At first, everything seems fine, the kids get money, popularity and sex. I’m not gonna lie, some of those scenes are amusing. They even get to see Imagine Dragons live. That’s super fun.

(from the same show this movie would have been filmed at)

Then the lead decides to start jumping around through time solo and disasters happen. If I were one of the kids, I would have rationalized the hell out of being at fault for huge disasters though, as one does. This is when the illogical time travel starts really bothering me. Now, it’s not just for fun. He has to fix things, but with the way that things have been going, I can’t buy what follows. Plus, even if I tried, it’s like he intentionally mucks things up.

I did enjoy his friends, but they didn’t get enough screen time. His love interest is annoying and the sister wasn’t onscreen long enough for me to form an opinion.

Yes, I’m impressed that this movie was filmed for around $3 million and earned about 10 times that much, but going into it, I didn’t know that. As a casual viewer that shouldn’t concern me. (Although, I’m sure producer Michael Bay is thrilled.) Another plus is that the film wasn’t overly long. Some found the fact that it’s set up as a found footage film to be a detractor. It slightly enhanced it for me, making the creepy scenes a bit creepier. Maybe, my biggest issue is that the lead becomes unlikable, but not annoying enough to completely hate. I like to have some strong feeling one way or another, when I’m watching someone’s story. I’m really only giving it 2 out of 5 stars for the initial premise and fun section of them just goofing around for personal gain.

The theme of the May 2015 Loot Crate was Unite. Check out my video review above and a breakdown of the items included below.

Note: Some links are Amazon affiliate links. If your cookies are cleared and you make a purchase after clicking through, then a small commission will be yielded for this site.

Exclusive Green Ranger T-shirt by Flophouse
approximately $10
power rangers tee
This is an exclusive, but I just value all tees at $10 or so. It was teased by LC that the tee for May would be Power Rangers related, so I ordered it in Robert Sunshine’s size, instead of mine. He’s the Power Ranger fan out of this couple. As usual, this shirt is made by Gildan. It is 100% cotton, so it does shrink if you don’t wash it in cold water. I forgot this time, but it still fits him fine. I’ve noticed that tees from Loot Crate seem to fit loosely, so even if you end up washing and drying them normally, they still fit well. He loves it and has gotten numerous compliments on it. I dig the design, even though I haven’t watched Power Rangers in decades. You can buy a Green Ranger costume tee for around $20 on Amazon.

Avengers: Age of Ultron Car Decal from Marvel
approximately $6.88
decal
This decal also appears to be an exclusive, as I’m not finding it anywhere online, aside from resellers. I think that it’s pretty cool. I definitely was all for this box when they announced that it would include at least two Marvel items. Other Avengers decals sell for $6.88 on Amazon.

Exclusive Team Fortress 2 4 Pin Collector’s Set
approximately $5
pins

These are another exclusive that you can’t buy anywhere else. These pins are for a free online game. I haven’t played it, but have already fallen for the pink unicorn (Balloonicorn) pin, adorable! You can play the game here FOR FREE via Steam.

Exclusive Bravest Warriors Tales from the Holo John #1 Comic by BOOM! Studios
approximately $1.99
KIMG0217
Yes, this is also an exclusive item. I don’t watch this show, but a friend of mine who does seemed to dig this comic. You can buy other Bravest Warriors comics and comic compendiums here on Amazon.

Marvel Super Heroes Ice Tray by ICUP, Inc.
$9.80
cubes
I am in love with this! Not only is it an ice cube tray with molds that include Captain America’s shield and Tony Stark’s face, but it’s also made of silicone. I plan to use it to make jello shots and candy as well as ice cubes.

Exclusive MAD Magazine Loot Crate Edition from DC Entertainment
approximately $2.66
mad
Yep, exclusive! Prior to receiving this, I hadn’t read MAD in years. However, this is totally getting me back into it. I really got a kick out of the Avengers parody comic within. A 6 issue/1 year subscription to MAD is $16 on Amazon.

Exclusive Marvel Sneaker Laces by Esquire Footwear
approximately $7
laces
These exclusive laces came in either black and white or color. They show the comic scroll that you see prior to each Marvel movie. Very fun!

Exclusive Rick and Morty Jigsaw Puzzle from Cardinal Industries, Inc.
approximately $5
puzzle
Yes, also exclusive. RS is a huge Rick and Morty fan, so he totally digs this. You can buy the first season of Rick and Morty here on Amazon.

Loot Crate May 2015 Unite Pin
approximately $1
mo
I think that these pins are cute. I do collect them, even though I don’t buy a crate every month.

Loot Crate Magazine Unite May 2015 No. 22
lc mag
I get a kick out of these “magazines”. They really are styled like one and are so much more fun to check out than the cards that other boxes tend to include. Not only do they include a rundown on the items in your box, but there are also a few related articles.

box
And lastly, the crate itself! Turned inside out, it resembles a superheroes’ locker room. I appreciate the detail that LC puts into their boxes.

Actual Price
$19.95

Approximate Retail Value
$49.33

As usual, this was another winning box content and value wise from Loot Crate.

I love Doctor Who. Yeah, that’s right, I said it. It’s a funny show for me to watch, even when I’m not really paying attention to it. I just sit back with a pen and some paper, and draw while the Doctor is throwing zany one liners and cracking jokes. It’s a TV series that has made me laugh on one episode and cry on the next. Each doctor has his own personality. Whenever he is dying or near death his body transforms into a brand new actor’s contract. With his faithful companions, he travels through time and space to different worlds, saving the day!

Season eight was beautiful. I remember sitting down, watching live, when he was revealed to take Matt Smith’s place in the blue box. I mean, yeah, when I first saw it, I was a little skeptical. I’m not the easiest when it comes to change and I kinda liked Matt Smith, but then I saw this.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOPpyXYcLtE

This sold me. I wanted that as the doctor. And for the most part that is kinda what I got, an angry old man in a suit. His acting obviously has a lot more depth. I was blown away by his performance as the Doctor.

For people who don’t watch the show, the Doctor is about 2000 years old by the start of season 8. Mind you, he was already pretty old, but with his regenerations he can transform himself back to youth. So him transforming into an older looking man, a man who does not even give a tenth of a fuck, and is more openly insulting and berating…..it’s so fucking great. Peter, as the Doctor, has definitely changed a few scenarios about the show. There is no longer a romantic interest between the Doctor and his companion. The show itself is set in a much darker tone then the other seven seasons. With the upcoming 9th season, we can definitely assume that it might only get darker.

All of us know that this isn’t Peter’s first time on Doctor Who. He played in season four’s “The Fires of Pompeii” and it was mentioned in Capaldi’s first episode as the Doctor that he has seen this face before. We can only speculate some kind of bullshit about why he chose that face, and maybe even see a couple other old faces from the previous Doctors later in the series, here’s hoping.

doc who poster 8

Now, the season didn’t really have any bad episodes. Some moments were drawn out a little too long, but each episode had it’s own special tone to it. My personal favorite episode of season 8 is “Listen”. It’s an episode about creatures who evolve specifically to not be seen. The episode was creepy. In the end, it was tied up in a nice little TARDIS blue ribbon.

The show is POP culture incarnate. With so much merchandise, that if you actually watch the show back to back and love it as much as I do, you will end up going to work one day with Doctor Who socks and underwear, showing off your wibbly wobbly t-shirt you just had to have. Between the wacky quotes, heartbreaking moments, and out of this world adventures. It’s no small wonder that a show like this should peak the minds of both the young and the old.

You can buy season 8 of Doctor Who in streaming, DVD, or Blu-ray format here on Amazon.com (Note: This is an affiliate link.)

bttf tee
Back to the Future 88MPH Tee
by Shirt Punch, exclusively for Nerd Block
approximately $10
This is an okay tee for a great movie. Personally I would have liked something more innovative. I can’t find this particular tee online. Here’s one on Amazon that includes 88MPH. This one is more of a cosplay style. It actually has Marty’s shirt and vest printed on it. Now I would have LOVED something like this! BTTF tees seem to retail online for about $10-20. This actual shirt was made exclusively for Nerd Block from Shirt Punch. Shirt Punch is a site that has a tee for a limited amount of time. Tees on there go for $10.

kevin smith book
Tough Shit: Life Advice from a Fat, Lazy Slob Who Did Good (paperback book)
by Kevin Smith
retail $13.49
I love Kevin Smith, but I have a huge stack of books to read. Hopefully this will be entertaining when I actually get around to reading it. IMHO-Books shouldn’t be a main item in a crate because it’s been my experience that they have the lowest resale value right after you buy one, even if it’s brand new. For instance, you can buy this used for 15 cents right now on Amazon. Why do I mention resale? I will resell items that I don’t want.

ecto 1
Ghostbusters Ecto-1 Car
by Titan(s) Vinyl Figures exclusively for Nerd Block
approximately $20
This is exclusive to Nerd Block. I immediately resold on eBay for $10, because it’s not my style. It would probably have a projected retail price of around $20. This is the Funko that I refer to in the video. If I had received this, it would be proudly displayed in my home right now.

pacman mug
Pac-Man Heat Changing Mug
by Paladone Products
$10.99
This mug sells for $10.99 on Amazon. The design changes with heat, which is cool, but I most likely would not pay over $5 for it.

nerd block cards
Nerd Play Cosplayer Playing Cards
by Nerd Block
approximately $1
I’m being generous at estimating these at any type of price point as I think they are a ridiculous product.

Actual Price
almost $30

Approximate Retail Value
$55.48

nb card 2

This box did not live up to my expectations. It proves that even if the items are technically worth an adequate amount, if they are not worth it to you, then it’s a waste of money.

april box

Please watch my above unboxing video. In addition, you can check out the below photos, links and additional info. This month’s box was quite spectacular.

Note: Some links are Amazon affiliate links. If your cookies are cleared and you make a purchase after clicking through, then a small commission will be yielded for this site.

fantasy mag
Loot Crate April 2015 Fantasy Pin
approximately $1
Yes, that value is made up, but I just feel that based on my experience this pinbacks are usually priced around there. This is a neat addition to the set of Loot Crate pins I’m slowly starting to collect.

me dnd tee
Dungeons & Dragons T-Shirt
from dndmerch.com
approximately $12
This particular tee was manufactured by the company Wizards of the Coast. They have many Dungeons & Dragons tees for sale here, starting at $14.95. Their Zazzle store doesn’t feature the exact tee in this box though. I’m going to base the price off of dndmerch.com’s site since theirs is more accurate to the design.

dragon tie
Red & Gold Dragon Bow Tie
from Black Tie Geek
approximate value $14
Their site isn’t up yet. A tie by them that was previously featured in a Loot Crate goes for around $14 on Amazon. This is fun. Not a frequently wearable item, but cool for every once in a while.

crown
Inflateable Crown
from Loot Crate Labs
approximately $1
I’m basing the above price on buying a dozen from Amazon. This is silly and would be fun to wear around at a renaissance festival or house party when you get in your cups.

princess bride cards
The Princess Bride Playing Cards
from Albino Dragon
$14.99
The main characters from the film are prominently illustrated on this set. I don’t think a deck of cards should cost almost $15, but if you were going to buy this anyway, then these are basically almost equal to the price of the entire box. They are very nice cards though. I just wouldn’t personally pay more than $10 for them.

potter tag
Harry Potter 9 3/4 Bag Tag
from Bioworld
$11.76
In the video, I said this would probably sell for around $10, I was so close. This is a very nice, large PVC luggage tag. I’m not even a Potterhead and I appreciate how well made it is. Definitely worth the retail price.

got usb
Game of Thrones Stark Sigil USB Drive
from CustomUSB
approximately $17
This is a 4GB drive. It was manufactured exclusively for Loot Crate. The shinier 8GB drive that is from the same company retails for about $34, so I’m giving this one a value of half of that price. In the video above, I mention that USB drives typically go for around $8-$12 around here. However, this is a themed drive, so it would cost more. This is one of my favorite items in the box!

got magnets
Game of Thrones House Sigil Magnet Set
from Dark Horse
approximately $9.99
The above GOT magnet set is very similar to this one, but includes 3 more magnets. My guess at a price of these in the video was $6, so if you factor in the extra magnets in the set above, I’m probably pretty spot on. I’m going to leave it at $9.99 though, because this particular set isn’t currently listed online. I really like these. I’m not super into magnets at this point in my life, but they are definitely fun. You can’t go wrong with anything Game of Thrones related when it comes to me.

april box empty

Actual Price

I’d definitely recommend this month’s Loot Crate. Everything was up my alley. It’s a great monetary value and a great value for me because I actually like the items.
